  • [WIP] Castle Ravenloft.

Yet another work in progress - lol.

I've got a couple of weeks holiday from work, and so I'm playing around with different maps.

I mapped Castle Ravenloft ages ago to run the original I6 AD&D Module Ravenloft in 3rd edition D&D - with a few alterations for balance. I did those maps with DD2 and printed it in room / corridor sections to lay out as floorplans.

I've got the recent Curse of Strahd reboot of the Ravenloft adventure for 5e, but while most of the maps inside are new Mike Schley maps, the Castle Ravenloft maps are more colourful copies the original isometric maps, but are actually much harder to understand than in the original module (smaller print on glossier paper).

So for fun I'm having a go at 2d copies of the Castle Ravenloft maps, mostly using the SS4 Mike Schley's Dungeons symbol set.

I'm also playing around with this map a lot to experiment with colour key (and later with those scary AHS and RGB effects.

This is the ground floor of the main building so far:

The staircases are placeholders - I've not decided how best to do them yet. The castle has lots of spiral stairs in several different styles.

There are a few holes in the walls, as I got carried away with colour key areas on the wall mask sheet. Oops!

The right hand edge of the map will be looking over a cliff, so I'm going to have a go a cliffs like Sue's Amazing Orde-on-the-Rock, to see if it's as hard as it looks!

  • The Misgivings (Rise of the Runelords spoilers!)

Well it's been more than a day or two, and I'm still not finished, but I had chance to update this tonight -  every room now has content, so it's certainly usable to run the adventure now. I'll probably work on the others floors, starting with the attic map, before spending any more time on this one.

There's also the place that the unearthed old stairs lead down to...

The Misgivings - Basement (WIP - 90% done):

As usual, this is reduced to 75px, per 5ft - I'll upload the 100px, per 5ft version to my gallery. ?

Clicking the map will open the 100px per 5ft version from my imgur page (the latest version of which will always be in my gallery).

Many of the symbols used in this map are from either The Forgotten Adventures free mapping assets, or from Tom Cartos' Patreon page.

These are great looking maps @simianorganism. ?

The rocks alongside the road look odd, they look like they're supposed to be a stone wall - in which case you probably need to add more symbols or an underlying polygon to fill in the gaps. Or if it's a stony edge, then I think you need to reduce the shadow, as it's the same size as the wooden fence shadow.

The shadow on the cliff looks weird as well. I think you need the ground at the top of the cliff to be on a higher sheet than the cliff and then cast a big wall shadow from there - so that the shadow is cast across the cliff sheet itself - then add a subtle shadow or large dark glow from the cliff sheet. That's how I did my cliffs for The Misgivings.

This is a really nice map Andre.

I liked reading about why you picked the location that you did. I went for one of the locations by the moat as I like having water in my maps (I would have gone for location 1, but Quenten beat me to it ?).
