Forest Trail project - part 1
I think I've also cracked the grass situation, using terrain patches (a blobby patch of grass texture created as a symbol for each of the 10 grass textures). The full grass textures are also available, but I like the more natural looking terrain patches better, so this map only has grass as symbols.
I've made a new problem for myself, though. I now need to make a few subtle pebble cluster and dead leaf patches for the dirt because it looks too plain.

The Creepy Crypt project
Long time without any visible sign of progress, but I can guarantee there's been a lot of work going on behind the scenes. The hardest part for me isn't the symbols as much as getting the textures to look right. Here is a sample of the textures I've made so far - an extract showing the various rocks, stones, dirts and a bit of water. The sample covers a range from formal tomb to creepy catacombe. I'd be interested to hear what you think.
Remember, this isn't about the symbols yet. It's just the fills. You will have to imagine all the spider webs, fungus and mummies, though I have added a single tomb from DD3 to show the scale of these fills.

Here are a few extracts from the finished example map for the June issue of the Cartographer's Annual. The map is a bit large, so I'm not sure if it will be the final example map since a normal sized render doesn't really show the details. These are taken from an 8000 px render.
However, I can say that there will definitely be a smaller part 2 to this style in August, so I'm open to suggestions for additional symbols to fill out the set. Most things are shown, though I forgot to use the tree roots.
I have just put these in my gallery here.

Someone on FB was interested in the fact that the drain connecting symbol could wind back on itself. Not sure how practical that is, but I added a second drain sheet and put a glow on it to cast a shadow on the drain below.
I've also made a connecting wall with a matching floor fill, and added in a few symbols.

Project Spectrum - Part 2
Well, I've done a bit more work to everything, and we now have a full set of cliffs as you would expect to find in an overland set, plus some that face away north.
And since I had to make them anyway I've trimmed up a second copy of them all to make a continuous set as well.
As I said earlier - its pretty clunky because all the continuous cliff segments are the same length, so they aren't really all that versatile, but I've welded 2 pairs together to make 2 inner bends if you want to make a sort of octagonal-ish crater with them instead of a plateau.
