  • Colour palette sharing

    Thanks, Remy :)

I had a feeling you would say that. I was hoping there would be a much easier way to share - especially for newbies who aren't so familiar with the way CC3 works. I know that when I first started it took me forever to even realise I could change the palette - never mind transfer it from map to map by saving it as the custom palette.

Next time Ralf or Simon ask for suggestions I'm going to ask if it would be possible to make CC3 load named palettes - the same way you can load named altitude palettes in FT3 :)

EDIT: and also to be able to save palettes by name - eg "Brown", "Gold" etc.

  • Looking for more mapping articles

Here's a few possibilities if anyone is interested:

    - Colour, colour schemes, contrast, texture and relative scale - picking and or making a set of textures that work together (that could be a long one because colour theory is fascinating!)
    - Making cloud symbols in GIMP (v2.8)
    - Making waterfalls in GIMP (v2.8)
    - Post processing the hill shading on a CC3 map in a bitmap editor (GIMP v2.8)

(I use GIMP v2.8 rather than GIMP v2.10 because it works better, and the files can be opened in other bitmap editors, unlike those of v2.10)

I'm a little busy right now, but I could probably do one or more of those in a month's time if anyone is interested.

  • Export Quality Methods

As Wyvern has already pointed out, unless you need to do some serious post processing (adding stuff in GIMP that you can't do anywhere near as easily in CC3, like detailed variable hill shading, or hand drawn highlights/shadows for individual focal points), its just a case of exporting it directly from CC3 as a JPEG with a reasonable amount of antialiasing. The default setting of 66% is a bit over the top in my opinion. I usually use about 20%

If you are intending to do a lot of post processing, then export as a PNG about 2 x the desired end result, and work on it at that scale. Once you are finished with the post processing in GIMP, save the GIMP file (in case you change your mind about any of the things you touched up), export the finished map to a PNG, then reopen the PNG and scale it down to the desired size.

  • Ruining a perfectly good building!

For anyone in any doubt, here is the Colour Key effect in place above the glow and directional shadow on that sheet.
