  • Winter Village style development (March 2022 CA issue)

I've changed the dormers for you, Wyvern :)

These appear only on the larger houses in the set - the richer merchant style houses. I'm just testing them on the only tiled house I've made so far, which is the smallest one.

  • a mountain of work ahead of me

Remy's suggestion is a good one, but maybe (and this is only a maybe) you could tackle it the other way around - make the mountains first and then a soft edged pass between them, a bit like drawing a river in the lowest point?

Do you have City Cliffs - the 2020 Cartographer's Annual? Not a problem if you don't, but if you do you could use the cliffs as rocky bluffs a bit like this. (Sorry about the crude 5 minute drawing).

These are city scale cliffs, but if you use them more as rocky bluffs at dungeon scale (I assume it's a dungeon scale map you are making) you could build up level on level - maybe use different rocky textures instead of grass.

Another idea is to add a sheet similar to the one in SS5 with a hugely blurred Bevel, Lighted effect on it to draw transparent polygons on it for hill shading. I've got one here in the style I'm working on.

You could use a combination of both those things, or combinations of other techniques, but the main suggestion here is to start with the terrain and not get stuck on the path itself. That can be added at the end when the terrain is done, and might even be a result of the terrain, rather than having to be specifically drawn in as a path.

  • Live Mapping: Contour Shading (Annual Vol 2) CANCELLED TILL NEXT WEEK

    Hi Everyone! :D

In tomorrow's Live Mapping session Ralf will be discussing contour shading - what it is, what it brings to a map, and how to add it in a Campaign Cartographer 3+ map.

Come along and join in, or watch later :)

  • Connecting Symbols

I didn't realise that would work with connecting symbols. Thanks Wyvern. Now I'm trying not to laugh and groan at all the times I've drawn long snakes of connecting symbols just to grab the one I want!

  • Global Lighting Not Working

    Thanks

I had to watch the first part a couple of times to revise what was said in that session, and I just caught it at 2x speed (trying to work this out fast for you). Ralf mentions that he already has some lighting effects set up in the sheets just before he switches on the Activate Lighting. That is why he gets a reaction from the map, and you don't.

There are two lighting sheet effects used to make a lighting setup. The first is Wall Shadow, Point Light Setup, and is used on any sheet where there are objects or shapes that you want to cast a shadow. You can adjust the Shadow length on this effect so that tables and chairs cast shorter shadows and walls cast infinite shadows.

The Wall Shadow, Point Light Finalize finishes the setup. Any sheet above the sheet with this final effect on it won't be affected by the lighting setup, and will appear as if light by ordinary daylight. That can be useful for the frame of the map and titles and labels, etc.

You will need to add these sheet effects (as many of the setup effects as you need on different sheets, but just one of the finalize effects) before you see a response to the activation of the lighting.
