  • How to light caves without entire outside being dark

When you want the background to be above the lighting you need to move it above the lighting, or below all the lighting sheets in the sheets and effects list. It actually ceases to be a background and becomes a foreground of sorts.

To get it that way the 'background' has to be drawn as a polygon on a sheet above the rest of the map (but normally below the SCREEN and TEXT sheets). Basically it will be a polygon that covers everything that isn't part of the cave.

    Connecting Hedges (dungeon scale)

These connecting hedge symbols were created as a fast and functional solution for making dungeon scale hedge mazes in a standard DD3 map. As with all connecting symbols you select the symbol from the catalogue and click at the end of the line you wish to draw your hedge on, then proceed to click along the line as if you are tracing it. A right click at the end of the line completes the process.

The catalogue contains 2 versions of the symbols. The first two are the 3 foot wide hedge and its associated round bush ends intended for use in imperial DD3 maps, and the second two are the 75cm wide metric hedge version of the same thing for metric DD3 maps. The catalogue can be accessed via the Walls button|DD2TILES| in DD3.

Alternatively, if you are navigating to find the catalogue file from any other template it can be found here:  @Symbols\User\Sue\Dungeon\Connecting Hedges.FSC

  • Free symbol pack - Dungeon scale connecting hedges

I made these connecting symbols 4 years ago back in 2019. It was the first connecting symbol I ever made, so it isn't drawn to the same standard I prefer to use today. However, it still works well enough if all you want is a really fast maze map. The connecting hedge doesn't officially match any particular dungeon style, but it works reasonably well in a DD3 dungeon map as shown below.

The pack contains one set of connecting hedge symbols and a symbol catalog with two options. The first pair of symbols in the catalog are the original imperial hedge that is 3 feet wide with it's associated 3ft diameter end bushes. The second pair of symbols is a metric conversion of the same, where the hedge is 75cm wide. If you have problems with hedges looking broken or sticking out too far at the corners the most likely cause is that you are using the metric hedges in an imperial map, or the imperial hedges in a metric map.

The connecting hedge pack can be downloaded here

Here is an example of the hedge used to make a maze map in DD3.

Useful tip: When you have finished drawing your maze, use the round hedges to cover any visible joins at the corners.

I can't say if they would work with any style in particular since they were created a couple of years before I started making any dungeon scale annuals, but the maze map was done using a DD3 template with DD3 fills and assets.

I'm looking at a couple of weeks before I can really sort this out, but its on the 'To Do' list.

I should warn you that where I wasn't really aiming to make them perfect at the time the quality isn't perfect. They do look a bit false close up. This was before I got really high tech with vegetation - pre Blender trees. But if all you want is a quick maze they might do. I got a few of the set working to get a better screen shot. The rest is still red crosses at the moment.

    Imperial only as well.
