  • Selling maps?

DM's Guild may be different to other community content programs such as Jonstown Compendium, Miskatonic Repository etc. For those you retain copyright to your own work, however you lose 50% of the sale price; 30% goes to Onebookshelf (DTRPG) and 20% to the publisher of the IP.

I would suggest doing a map pack, a collection of original maps sharing a theme; a Keep with a multi-level dungeon for example or a set of wilderness/outdoor battlemaps - something useful to GMs for whatever IP you intend selling them for. Have a look at some already for sale to get an idea of what's what including pricing.

I'm not a fan of PWYW (Pay What You Want). Most people, myself included, will download it for free. In my opinion, if you feel the work is good enough to share, it's good enough to get paid for. So let's say you do a pack of 6 maps and your research indicates others are selling similar packs for $7-$10 offer yours at introductory price of $1.99 and see how that goes. Be sure to promote yourself on the social media channels for whatever IP you're doing the maps for. If it goes well, do another pack and build from there increasing the price gradually over subsequent releases.

Good Luck! You may even get some commission work...if the right person see's your product.

  • WIP: New Dungeon Commission

Well, hasn't this been a long, drawn out process...I'm surprised the client is still with me...

I think I lost interest in this project for 3 reasons; their complexity and size, doing player and GM versions and general laziness on my part. Finally, removed the digit and got them done.

I've sent these off for approval - hopefull, if there are any more changes they will be minor...

The red lines (squiggly or straight on the last map) represent illusory walls and whatever.

Due to the number of traps on the last 2 maps, I created a key in the Map Notes.

  • Your favourite settings? (worlds)

Hmmm. Have to give this some thought.

Started playing TTRPG's seriously in early 2000 at the ripe old age of 37.

I'd been introduced to D&D via the Dragonlance novels in the early '80s and bought the Red Box Basic set with Sturm Brightblade facing off against a Dragon on the cover. Found a local game, no idea how back then - no internet and phones were either firmly affixed to a wall or attached via a cord! That first game didn't really do it for me so I left it for a bit. Fast forward a decade or so, and I ended up buying the Baldurs Gate computer game for my first Mac, a model LC575 (I think) an upgrade from my Apple IIe... At the time I was heavily into fantasy literature and had aspirations of becoming an author. I convinced my significantly better half to buy me the D&D 3E Player Handbook as an aid to character development. As a bonus, I scored Chaosium's, Dragonlords of Melnibone, I'm an avid fan of Moorcocks Eternal Champion novels, featuring Elric! of course, Dorian Hawkmoon, Corum and Erkose and a few sundry others in passing. I think you maybe able to guess where this long-winded post is heading...

Anyhow, to cut a long story very short, I ended up finding a group playing AD&D 2ED in Greyhawk. Then a couple of the younger guys and I left to play 3E blah, blah and I've been playing with those guys regularly for 20 odd years.

During the debacle of 4E around 2009-2010 we became disillusioned with D&D and though we'd never played DLoM, it had an advert for Elric! the game. Some researching led me to Mongoose's Elric of Melnibone using their 2nd edition of the Runequest rules. I was hooked! We played a lengthy campaign in the Young Kingdoms of Elric's world - set quite a few years earlier than the stories, it was a blast and hence is my favourite fantasy TTRPG and setting. I have fond memories of the 3E Forgotten Realms, along with its stunning maps. I'd run a fantastic campaign there and we had some fun in Eberron to. I've always had a thing for the maps in games ever since I picked up the Red Box Set, and thankfully that continues to this day.

I don't play with that same bunch anymore, we started playing Pathfinder and having had my eyes open to Call of Cthulhu, well, let's just say my TTRPG tastes have changed somewhat...

  • Creating Symbol Catalog issue.

Thanks @Monsen Read parts one & two of the advanced symbol series of articles. Fantastic!

Solved my issues with the symbol completely and I was able to use my original selection of grate symbol.

See below example. I prefer the sans serif (top left) to the serif font (bottom right) TBH, I think it works better for the symbol.

After this little adventure, I think I will delve more into symbol catalogs. It seems to me that for future work, it will save a lot of time to create symbol catalogs for each client where I use symbols from multiple catalogs and repeating custom symbols like the one in the pic. Obviously, only those symbols from outside the default style would be included.

  • Creating Symbol Catalog issue.

@Monsen I'm going to read that entire series of articles...

For the life of me I couldn't get the text to be on top of the .png of the grate so I deleted the whole thing and used a different grate .png, symbol that's just a ring. Perfect. Entered the text, put a glow around it. Did all the saving and whatnot but the glow is around both components not just the text. Deleted.

I will need to do a multi-part symbol, hence why I'm going to do my 'homework' properly...
