Map notes only take 8000 characters, so longer text have to be broken down over multiple. Usually, I get a bit more than a page of text in each. I think Wyvern has the record with a 20-part map note.

The issue here is that all notes go into map notes in the map file itself, and those doesn't support anything but plain text, that's why it has to be a plain text document, no formatting, no tables, and no images. I can post a prettified version on the website, since that is a .pdf, but it is important that no content should be lost by reading the text-only version in the map notes.

I think this is a limitation with using raster symbols as a symbol fill. You'll find the issue remins the same if you just draw a regular shape with the basic tools with that fill too, no need to involve a drawing tool. The issue here is that the symbol fill expects to be able to crop the part of the symbol that's outside the fill area, but that is impossible with images, because you cannot reduce them into lines and polys which you can chop into pieces like with vector symbols. Draw -> Symbols in Area is much more suited for this operation. It will even give you the option to randomly select from the grave group so they don't all look the same. You may need a couple of attempts to find the right values.
