Hi Y'all,
Due to the recent discussions re hex maps, I decided to modify the CC3 Overland Hex style to enable fractal coastlines and islands.
Here's what I did:
- Changed the sheet order, moving the sea sheets between the Symbol Hex and Borders sheets, added a color key effect and inside glow effect to the sea sheet.
- Created 2 new drawing tools; a Sea, default fractal and an Island, default fractal.
Here is the .FCW file so you can see exactly what I've done.

Here is WIP of Australia done in this style. I saved my files as Templates as per Remy's blog article.
But the hexes are too small to see...Oh wait, WIP... 😉
When I'm done, I'll post the FCW so folk can zoom in. I'm doing state by state but it will take awhile as in 2 weeks I'm off on a 2 month roadtrip from Penrith to Darwin, then Alice Springs and Port Augusta ending up at Broken Hill for a 3 day music festival.
Here is another WIP.
Hope you consider using indigenous names for the cities shown 🙂
Do you mean the actual name, or the nation name; i.e Sydney/Gadigal?
Yes, as you have given in the example.
Also, see here:
Some differences as you can see.
Also, for your interest, if you want to make a 'fantasy' Australia, with interesting politics if 'elevated' to a medieval European civilization level. Something I have had in the back of my mind for a while, and am sort of doing with my map of Ostralura.

How many hexes is that? 😉
Around 5-6…hundred!
Please remember to mark them in the terrain as you pass though them for the benefit of future travelers.
Just for you Monsen,
Here is the rough path our trip will take.
OMG - same route I went camping in about 6 years ago. A great trip
Our original plan, from 5 years ago, was to follow the east coast into Melbourne, then across to Tasmania to do the corners (we did the central parts in 2006) back to Melbourne then The Great Ocean Road to Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and follow the coast up to Perth. My wife's bowel cancer, all good now except from suffering LARS, meant we had to postpone to 2020.
Late 2019, as you know Quenten, bush fires absolutely ravaged the areas we planned to visit. We rescheduled to May, but rather than follow the coast to Perth, we would go directly via Dubbo (my sister and brother-in-law lived there at the time and were joining us) and then head up to Broome before coming back. But COVID hit and now is the first chance we've had. We modified the trip because a) it's quiet at my work ATM and the boss suggested taking my leave would be a good idea and b) we've got to be in Broken Hill mid-August for the Mundi-Mundi bash, a 3-day music festival in the outback.
We're really looking forward to it. I've got a 4x4 (unmodified) dual cab with a tray and canopy set-up and an Oztrail Camper 8 camper trailer. Originally we were going to just use our Oztrail Tourer 9 Plus tent but decided to get a CT for the extra comfort and storage (we're both in our early 60's and sleeping on an air mattress isn't as much fun as it used to be!).
Here is a bit of an update. I think I'll work on a state-by-state basis, starting with my home state of NSW. Obviously not finished yet...
The tress seem a bit off scale compared to mountains
It’s drawn with a terrain drawing tool, I’ll need to rescale it…
Another update with bitmpas re-scaled. Looks much better in close up now I think.
