Problems rendering maps with effects

About half the time it works fine. The other half of the time CC3 either crashes or the display window turns green and blinks forever. This also happens during printing. How do I fix it?

  • And when it does print, I'm still having problems with it taking ages to print.

I'm having a crash problem related to effects too. It's specifically to do with adjusting wall shadows. It happens when I do this:

    - I go to sheets and activate effects
    - I got to a sheet that has a wall shadow effect and click edit on the Wall Shadow settings
    - I change the size of the wall shadow
    - When I click ok, the screen goes grey and the program hangs up and I have to close it.

I will note that if I do not edit wall shadows, but leave settings to default, they render fine and cause no problems. I also seem to be able to edit other effects without problem (I have tried with blur and edge fade).

I am running CC3 with DD3 and CD3 (and Annual 2008); I have installed the most recent update. This has happened while creating a City and a Dungeon. I haven't tried it with an overland map.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a HP Pavilion laptop with an AMD Turion II dual-core 2.3G processor with ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 128mb graphics and 4 G ram. I know Windows 7 has confounded CC3 a bit, and that an entertainment laptop is not ideal for using for CC3 so accept that it might be my setup----but would still appreciate any insights and/or suggestions for fixing if there are any.
  • First thing that comes to mind is where do you have CC3 installed to? There have been some reported problems if it's installed into the C:\Program Files folder. Both Vista and Win7 have some extra protocals that can interfere with CC3 if installed in this location.

I haven't tried it with Win7 but I had the same problems with Vista when installed to that folder. Since then, I always install to a new folder named C:\CC3 and these sorts of problems disappear.

There's an excellent article on the forums here on an installation order that also helps dramatically.

  • I have it installed to c:\Program Files (x86)

Which is different from c:\Program Files

But maybe it's still causing the problem. I've jumped from using XP to 7 so I'm still figuring out the changes and such.

*sigh* I don't want to reinstall but if that might fix it, I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Sorry to disappoint you, but it is really not. It is just that 64-bit versions of windows have two Program Files folders, one for 64-bit software, the other for 32-bit software, but they both have the same problematic behavior. To install outside of Program Files, you cannot use either of these directories, but you need to make your own at the drive root.
  • I too have had this problem, or at least a variant of it. I have gone through a complete uninstall from the x86 directory to a folder on the root of my c: driver C:\Profantasy. I might point out that, although I ran the uninstall and everything went as it should that when I re-installed to the new folder (C:\Profantasy) that the registry must have still held my credentials because it was unnecessary to re-enter the license codes for any of the programs. I point out that I used the article in mention, the one in the KN titled "CC3 with Vista Installation". Now this did reduce the crashes, but all of the programs crash if you render the effects and then try to print. In my case I have an i7 920 and 6GB ram with 2 MSI Xfire video cards. It aint horsepower. If I had to make a guess I would say it has something to do with direct draw or the 64 bit version of the print interface to my HP K5400 (networked) printer. I had to recode some elements of direct draw during the RC release of Win7 in order to get "Neverwinter Nights" to display its video. Actually re-code might be a tad strong, I had to mix components from an older release 10.x with a new release 11.x that was in RC releases over build 1400 in order to see anything on the screen.
All that said I prefer to let the guys at Profantasy correct this, and I am certain that they will, given the time to do so.

  • Raemann, yeah, I followed the folks' advice here and am still having my crash-on-editing-certain-effects problem--the installation folder is NOT the issue.

I think it has something to do with the latest update. When I reinstalled the program, v 3.24 did not produce the error, but when I installed (manually because of a problem with update 8) update 8 the crash happened again.

    Update 9 is now available.
  • I have installed update 9 and still have this problem.

  • I have an identical problem to Death Quaker running CC 3.41 (Update 9). It only occurs if I edit and already existing Wall Shadow, Directional. If I delete the wall shadow, directional and create a new one I can put whatever settings I want. However, if i then try and go back and edit it I get a crash (guessing the thread is locking up, screen goes gray). It is also interesting to note that the crash occurs even if open the edit dialog box and then cancel out without making changes.

I just upgraded to Windows 7. I used to run Windows Vista with the same problem (might have been Update 8). Using Vista I tried installing to different folders (non-program files) and that did not affect this problem. Additionally, I tried enabling full read/write access to the CC3 directories without any effect.

@Bajtaur I haven't been able to reproduce this on my Windows 7 system. Does it happen on all maps?
