The Community Atlas Anniversary mapping contest is now over. During the month of February, 29 maps where submitted, which is just above one per day. During this contest, we managed to pass 150 maps in the atlas. Great work everyone.

The voting is now over, and the results are in. For the details results, look at the lists at the bottom of this post.

Winner, best map: ScottA, Feralwood Forest (map #11)
Winner, random: Quenten, Magumul Empire (map #5)
Winner, random: Wyvern, Night Sky over Nibrium (map #3)

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone for contributing. Great effort everyone.

And to everyone receiving 0 votes on the best map vote, don't despair. Since people were only allowed to vote for a single map, that doesn't mean people didn't like your map, it just means you weren't anyone top choice. And while the winner was very clear, the overall number of votes was a bit low, just above 1 vote per map on average, so quite a few very nice maps actually ended up with 0 votes.

    Random Draw

The random draw was done using the sequence generator over at random.org in Advanced mode. As previously announced, the 5 secret numbers I received from five different community members were summed up, and the total was used as the persistent identifer. This ensured a random sequence not predicatable by me or any individual number giver, but at the same time ensured a reproducible result, as anyone with the number can easily repeat the draw to check the results.

The secret numbers were (each provider can check their own number to prevent manipulation by me, and all moderators/admins can see the original whispers and check that the correct numbers were indeed used):
    Shessar: 57
    kathorus: 486795
    Josh.P.: 83
    Dogtag: 8675309
    ScottA: 52
    Total: 9162296

The generated list then looks like this. Winners would be the top two maps (unless the mapper of those had already won another prize, in which case we would simply have continued down the list until an eligible winner could be found. In this case, both the two two were eligible.

    Hey Remy :)

    That's a really cool contest.

You could advertise it at the Guild? If you contact one of the Community Leaders they might put it up on the News forum for you. (its only accessible to CLs and Publishers, so I can't do it for you - sorry!)

Thanks Sue, but I think I leave that to someone who actually uses the guild, there should be several among our users here. I never managed to get into that place, and I don't have the postcount to PM anyone which means I need to to post publicly to make private requests, which means they might not even see it unless they read every post.

I'm on the road in February (actually 23 Jan to 13 March), so I might get a map up and running before I go, then submit it in Feb - is that OK?

As long as you submit it in February, all is fine, doesn't matter when you make it (Although I do hope this doesn't cause everyone to stop submit maps until February). I intentionally announced this early so people could prepare (and to have the entries coming in all throughout February, and not just the last few days)

Just to clarify, all maps handed in during the month of February will automatically participate in the contest, you don't need to do anything special to participate other than to hand in an atlas map during this month. And, the more maps you hand in, the larger the chance of getting one of the random prices.

Remember that the contest will start on February 1st, at midnight UTC, and end on February 28th on midnight UTC, so keep the time zones in mind if you plan on handing in a map right around the month change. And remember, it is fine to start on the map now hand have it ready for February, you don't need to wait until February to start your contest map, as long as it is handed in during February.

And remember, this contest is open to everyone. I would very much enjoy seeing some new mappers to the atlas for this. And don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about the process.

And with February officially entering the calendar (UTC), the contest is now open for submissions, and will stay open for the entire month of February (UTC).

Remember, this contest is open to everyone, you don't need to be a seasoned veteran or a renowned artist to participate. As long as you can produce a map that is reasonably faithful to the area you are detailing, that is all that is required (And I have seen many people posting 'First Maps' in these forums that easily qualify).
I especially encourage new users to the atlas to contribute, this contest is the perfect starting point. But existing contributors are very well welcome too.

Any type of map is welcome, be it overland, city, village, street, dungeon, cave, floorplan or anything else. All you need to do is to find a spot in the atlas where this map would fit, and request it. Feel free to ask questions if you are unsure of anything.

If you are short on time, pick an easier map type. Overland maps are generally faster to make than cities, and not every dungeon needs to be enormous. Small dungeons and floorplans (inns, temples, houses, etc) are also needed.

Please read the top post for rules and contest details.

I look forward to receiving your submissions.

    Happy Mapping.

Yes. I always render the atlas maps on a dedicated setup with only a clean install of windows and CC3+ with all add-ons, so maps will always be rendered the way an average CC3+ user will see them.

Posted By: MonsenAny maps submitted to the atlas during the month of February are eligible for the contest. For clarity, we use the UTC+0 time zone to determine when February begins and ends.
At the time of this posting, it should be 32 hours left of the competition.

While the maps will always be welcome in the atlas, the time limit for the contest needs to stay firm, so we cannot accept late entries unfortunately.

In preparation for the random drawing, can anyone who reads this whisper me a message with a number. I will use sum of the first five numbers I receive as a random seed for generating a random ordering of the participants over at random.org for determining the winners of the random draws. I will be using the sum of numbers from five different people because that means that no single individual can affect the randomness of the outcome, and by using a fixed number as the seed, the drawing can be reproduced by anyone who wish to check. The range of the list I will generate will be the number of maps entered into the contest.

Thanks, I now have all the five random numbers I need, posted by Shessar, Kathorus, Josh.P., Dogtag and ScottA. I'll publish the numbers when the time for the drawing is ready, and each of those five people will be able to see that I haven't modified their numbers, and moderators can also check all of them against the original whispers.

You did, and this is based on the time of actual map submissions, and not simply due to randomized processing order of the queue.

With the contest now nearing it's end (6 hours left as I write this), make sure that I have received all your maps. I don't have any unprocessed maps in my inbox right now, so if anyone have submitted anything that isn't listed in the entries, make sure to notify me as quickly as possible. I cannot accept maps for the competition after the deadline, even if it was because of an email that never arrived (safest option is to upload it in a whisper here in the forum, since you then can see yourself that it arrived, even if I don't see it until after the time limit, the timestamp in the forum will prove that it was handed in before the time limit). And of course, if anyone is planning to send a last-minute entry, make sure you double check that you actually attach the map (and the right one). While late maps will always be welcome in the atlas, in interest of fairness for all, I need to stick with the time limits for the contest.
