Installing CC3+ on Ubuntu 14.04 with Wine

Hi all,

I bought CC3+ about a year ago and successfully installed it on by Ubuntu system (if I had to jump through any hoops, I don't remember what they were). However, I recently bought a new machine, and when I try to run the CC3PlusSetup.exe via wine it successfully fills two progress bars, then disappears for a considerable amount of time before bringing up the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 12.0 could not be installed. -2147023436

Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system.

CC3+ Setup cannot continue.

Googling the error message turn up this thread:

but I tried downloading and running the three .exes from Microsoft's site, and none of them do anything visible.

Anybody have any tips?

  • Thanks suntzu, but I already tried all three of the files downloadable from that page. (I couldn't find anything on the page explaining what the difference between the three files was, and I doubt they'd say which to use with Wine even if there were.:)) None of them did anything visible - they just give me the busy cursor for a few seconds, then nothing.

The file ending in x86 file is for 32 bit operating systems and the one ending x64 file is for 64 bit ones.
You only would install out of the 3 files the one of the 2 mentioned above you need. Also, the installer can take a good bit of time before it does anything.
  • Ah, okay. When I get home from work I'll try the x64 one again and give it a few minutes before I give up on it. I assume there should be some sort of visible indication that it's doing something - a progress bar or whatever? Or does it just silently install the necessary files?
  • Most software does have a progress bar... ; however, some software checks the install program, then vanishes from the monitor, then starts the install.

The Various Microsoft Visual C++ versions do what Jim said about checking the install. It checks to see if you already have it installed and if you need to do a repair, removal, or install it first time. Also, Visual C++ is on that normally takes a while to install. I had to do a clean install of a Visual C++ version for another program and it took about 45 minutes to reinstall it.

Visual C++ installer may also go onlne and download additional files doing the install too.

Plus, if you have anti-virus software running it can cause the installer to take much longer, sometimes an hour or 2 or more. So try turn of any anti-virus software if it is taking too long.

I also did some digging and found that you may need to use Winetricks to install it. (See both pages especially the second.)
