Well I gotta say, enabling even the default effects make it so much nicer that it feels like cheating. Had to fiddle with it a bit to get the docks working but I'm actually mostly satisfied with the look now. Thanks a bunch for the tips, though if you see something else that could be improved, don't hesitate to say. I'll be sure to post the whole thing once it's finished.
