drawing really large starships ?

Last Friday night I looked at using the 15000' x 12000' Incredibly Massive Alt template for starships in Cosmo.

So I then made a 1.5 square hex grid of yellow, for construction purposes. To help me keep clean lines on the deckplan.

I zoomed extents... and then saw a large yellow rectangle.

So is there a way to use this template and keep the square construction grid small enough for starship room drawings... Or do I have to use smaller templates and put text on them that reads something like 'this part 3 connects to part 4 along the top of each png' ?

Help !

Thanks.

  • You could use the method's Joachim used in his fill style study to insert detailed sections into a larger deckplan as symbols. He links to a tutorial pdf from that thread.

If the deckplan is for Traveller, then the majority of the ship is likely given over to fuel tanks, and a very large starship design would likely use standard 'templates' for staterooms, escape pods, weapon turrets, etc, so Joachim's method would probably work really well.

Jim, as the grid becomes too huge and you zoom out , you only see the lines, not the intervals between them. I'd suggest to add two grids to the map and move one to a different layer or sheet; one at your small 1.5 sq size and another perhaps ten times that size. That way you can show the smaller on when you are zoomed in and the larger when zoomed out.
  • Yeah, I could make a large square grid to block in the big spaces, and then zoom in for the small rooms. I'll check into it.
