No Tents in CD3?

DogtagDogtag Moderator, Betatester Traveler
I recently found myself in a common situation. I needed to map out a djinn encampment on an Earth pocket within the Plane of Elemental Fire. You know how that goes. Anyhow, I started making a battle map of the camp's control center, following some general guidelines from Annual 21 (love the Annual, btw) and things were looking pretty nice, even with my poor mapping skills. But then I found I needed some tents. I mean, everyone knows that djinn pitch big tents in their temporary military encampments, right? Unfortunately I couldn't find any bitmap symbols for tents. I had the old CC2 (or Pro?) vector symbols but no bitmaps. I found the Middle East symbols in the CD3 A catalogs but there were no tents. Did I miss them, or do we not have them in CD3?

Thanks.

For the curious, here's the map I made. It took me an hour or two to make (see "poor mapping skills", above). It worked well enough for our virtual table top game (using Klooge Werks), but you can see how the vector tents really stand out.

    *bump*

    Anyone? Beuller?
  • I made some (still vector though) tents and market awnings for the Temples add-on. So if you have that, you might take a look.

Thanks for the reply, sdavies2720. I do, actually, have the Temples add-on so I'll check it out. But I'm curious to know if we have tent symbols in CD3 (etc) or, if not, why were they left out? :-(

    Thanks again,

AFAIK there are none in CD3. As for why, I'm not one to have an answer.
It's a good idea for a future annual perhaps.
  • You could always turn those tents you have drawn into symbols.

Thanks JimP, but I didn't draw the tents. They are symbols, from CD2 or CD Pro. But they're vector symbols, which I think stand out rather starkly against the high-quality bitmap symbols that make up the rest of the map.

@Leonal: I agree, it might make a nice Annual entry.

I guess I'm disappointed that we don't have CD3 counterparts to all the CD Pro symbols. It means I might not be able to recreate all my CD Pro maps using the newer product. At least, not without making some of the new maps look strange by using the lower-detailed and cartoony-looking vector symbols. I don't have anything against vector symbols but let's face it, they don't always mix well with bitmapped symbols. It also means that if I were to give CD3 as a gift, then my friend would not be able to map a nomad camp, but he could if I gave him CD Pro instead.

Don't get me wrong, I love ProFantasy products. I've got darn near all of 'em, going back 10 years or more. I suppose its a kind of irony that the high-quality, attention to detail, and world-class customer service that I've always experienced from ProFantasy makes this more disappointing than it would be otherwise. *shrug*
  • As long as you don't give them to anyone else, you can change them. Different colors, different textures, etc.

    Sorry, not sure I follow.
  • I haven't done it so someone else will have to explain. But you can take Profantasy's vector symbols and alter them as long as yolu don't share them with others.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I'm not much of an artist. I might make my own symbols some day (out of aerial photos?) but, for me, the point of using software and buying add-ons and symbol sets is so I get professional art/symbols. As much as I might want to, I don't have much time to devote to learning how to create, and then creating, symbols. I have to work to find time to make maps as it is. Something I don't do nearly as often as I would like. I mean, I've had the CC products (CCx, DDx, CDx) for years and years and I think I have less than 10 finished maps, including the one above (and a couple dozen test and unfinished maps).
  • Would someone care to test if these work?

It's the first time I've tried to create a symbol catalogue for distribution, so there's no guarantee.

Click here to get the .zip file - installation instructions (if they work) are in the zip.

Symbols work fine and look good. You have defined them with an odd origin though. For such symbols, middle center is more logical than middle left.
Also, the URL in your readme did not work. There is an extra t in there.
  • I have made my own symbols, available from my web site for free, but that was back in CC2. Just making basic symbols isn't hard. Its the detailed ones I cannot do as I'm not an artist either.

  • Thanks, Monsen.

I'll redefine the symbols and fix the readme when I rework the PNGs (there's a bit of white pixellation around the current versions).

I was working from CA14, which recommends middle left for origins; should have figured that that's only to attach things to walls in DD.

Wow, Andy, those are really nice! Thanks for sharing!

And thanks for sharing yours, too Jim. While I have been making maps like the above for my virtual table-top sessions, I still use CC2-style maps for other things!

    Exactly

On another note; A varicolor version of the tents would be nice.
  • I'll see what I can do - not sure how to combine varicolour with bitmaps yet, but I'm sure there's something lurking in a manual or help file somewhere.

    If I can't find it, I'll ask. :D

Great stuff, Andy, thanks. If you want instructions on how to do CD3 style varicolor symbols, I can dig them out. I think I might have posted them here on the forum once already.

    Edit: I found it.
