Hi. I purchased Campaign Cartographer and Fractal Terrain about 2 years ago, and I'm finally getting around to seriously trying to learn how to use it.
For mapping gaming purposes, I have 2 things I am working on:
1) A fictional world with relatively contemporary technology, that I wish to make look like "modern" maps as best as possible, and
2) I have an idea for writing something up for Jonstown Compendium (the Chaosium-authorized fan work on Runequest and Glorantha). These maps will be much less "technical" and more "expressionistic."
Anyhow, I have very little idea how this community works, but I want to learn and contribute. Thanks.

Also, while I kinda charged in clueless with Fractal Terrain, I'm going to be going through the Tome of Ultimate Mapping pretty carefully to get a clue about CC3+. It is clearly a powerful program, but I'm not sure I would call it "Intuitive" ;)

The intuitiveness of CC3+ is directly proportional to your familiarity with CAD software. Most folks coming to the program afresh are more used to image manipulation software, and that works in a very different way. But we all started from the same point of knowing nothing. Now we know how much we didn't know then and how much we still don't know... ?
I'd recommend working through the CC3+ manual and the tutorials (especially the video tutorials - see the links in the Forum sidebar, any page, for these) before going too deeply into the Tome. The Tome's intended more for people who are already moderately familiar with the program, but want to get more involved with it, and improve their mapping strategies and abilities still further.
