Improving my rivers

I'm looking to edit my map now I've got it to a point where I'm happy with it's "creation", and learn the methods of editing.
I have used the editing node and add node buttons to create the valley that the river is in midscreen. However it was rather painful - 1) I couldn't see the nodes in any way so didn't know what I was adding/moving and 2) it took a fair bit of trial and error. I wouldn't fancy doing this method for the other rivers, is there an easier way? I suppose I could just delete the contour polygons and start again but wondering if there's a better or easier way. What's the most effective looking way of doing rivers and hill contours together?

It is generally far easier to use the edit feature of the drawing tools rather than doing node manipulation
Note though that the edit function doesn't work on smooth entities, only straight or fractal ones, and you must have used a drawing tool to create the original entity as well, as far as I'm aware.
You're not kidding.... I found reference to the edit tool elsewhere in an answer but it didn't explain where it was, I must have hovered over every button on the interface trying to find it! Once again, many thanks.
You can always change the lines from smooth to straight, make your edits, then convert back to smooth. (right click the Explode button)
