Hi Everyone! :)
In the Live Mapping session on 2nd September, Ralf demonstrates the Darklands City style from the September issue of the Cartographer's Annual.
Book a seat and come and join in.
Or watch it later, if you can't make it :)

Can't wait - for the video AND the annual issue.
I can't wait either. It looks fantastic based on the example map.
There's a Darklands City now? Didn't see that coming - but only 'cos y'know, dark...😎🌑🔭
Working on a darklands city right now
Me too, with some changes... I wanted to make a sea port, and got needed items from CA 169. dock and ships.
@JimP Those are some of the things I will be adding in part 2 ;)
I figured, I just went ahead. You probably mentioned them before this. But I have spent much of my time this morning sneezing.
Now I'm having trouble via cell phone.
Any chance, Sue, of listing some of what things you are including in part 2?
The list hasn't yet been finalised. I think a better time to do that will be once everyone has been using it for a couple of weeks and come up against a lack of 'this' or 'that'.
30 minute call :)
I'll just sit here and eat chocolate chip cookies while I wait.
Sorry to say I missed this live today, as my ISP decided it wanted the afternoon off, so arranged "a major outage in my area", that seems to have lasted most of the afternoon and early evening. Took me nearly 40 minutes to get through to them on the phone ("You can find the answer to most questions more quickly by using our website"...), despite the fact my call was apparently important to them, as the nice lady bellowing in my ear kept insisting. Which had of course already given me the clue that it wasn't just me that was having the problem...
Joys of technology, eh?
Oh that's a really great Catch 22. Almost as good as the one where I was trying to change my phone number on my Amazon account, but they wouldn't let me do it until I gave them the security code they sent... to my old number!
So I watched part of the video, will watch the rest this weekend. What I saw was informative as I learn about new functionality that I didn't know about before with just about every video. Also I noticed on Ralf's toolbar an opton for Tablet? Does that indicate some new feature coming up in CC4?
No, the tablet option was there already back in CC2. But you have to connect a digitizing tablet with wintab drivers to see it.
When you re-did the grass because of the acne could you have made an alternate color sheet (like the hot pink color), place it below the sheet with acne, apply the same effects and thus remove the issue? LoopySue gave me that trick awhile ago and it works like a charm most times.
You could, but it is far more elegant to make textures that don't do that in the first place. I think I know what went wrong. They were working perfectly together, but at the last minute I reduced the colours to 64K to try and reduce the size of the style. I think that is where it went wrong. Unfortunately, when this kind of thing happens anything I do to improve the situation probably won't be published until the annual download is generated at the end of the year.
Ahh, I forgot there is coming a part 2 to this style...

Excellent!

Hi Loopysue,
At one time you posted a tutorial on how you make textures in GIMP but for the life of me I can't find it anymore. Do you know where this is linked too or am I mis-remembering? Maybe those with the time and energy could change the colors themselves if that is possible.
Hi kevbeck :)
I did a 3-part blog about how to make parchment in GIMP here, but it's not seamless parchment. If you make large enough sheets of it you can use it as a background bitmap by importing the file.
I also did a blog about making seamless tiles in CC3 from CC3 symbols here.
Other than that, though, I haven't made seamless tiles in GIMP. I tend to use Krita a lot for a hand drawn feel. It has an endless plane on which you can draw anyting you like and it joins up with itself at the outside edges.
The other much older app I use has become abandonware, so on principle I no longer mention it in case anyone goes out and buys it and discovers the library of resource images is no longer there. I remember how irritated I was when someone else recommended an app that you could still pay for, but which never worked. I had to get my bank involved to get my money back!
Maybe you remember a blog that Joe Sweeney wrote, centred on the use of Filter Forge? This one perhaps?
Unfortunately, the library seems to have vanished, so the links no longer work. But Filter Forge is still around. It's useful, but not something I need for myself right now.
...
A general note about the Darklands City textures here, though.
It appears that Ralf did an expert job at uncovering a brand new (newly discovered) bug, live and right in front of you during the Live Mapping stream. Where the totally blank TERRAIN Grass sheet underneath the sheet he imported from my map called TERRAIN Grass 02, caused the transparency acne, even though there was nothing on it. If you hide that sheet, or delete its effects, the map works fine - as intended and designed.
It's on the bug list now...
My Internet has started timing out, not just buffering, in the local day time. And sometimes at night.
Checking the Darklands City sample maps this evening, having reinstalled the CA issue after it was updated to fix the acne issues, it looks as if some symbols are missing, as there are now red Xs on both samples that weren't there when I checked the original download a few days ago. It looks as if four of the bridge and wall symbols have been deleted from the catalogue, specifically: Bridge stone ft [50], City wall ft [30], Town wall ft [30] and Town wall damaged 01.
That's wierd! I'm not having that issue myself, even though I archived the whole set of originals before installing the published set to have the same as everyone else (and to be able to see things like this when they occur).
I will investigate...
That was a mistake on my part, when Sue updated some of the bitmaps and I built a new setup, I left out a subfolder. It's fixed now. If you re-download the issue and install it again, the images should be fine.
Thanks Ralf :)
If there is a part two coming for this style, it would be great to have dead vegetation......
Indeed, thanks very much for resolving this so quickly on a weekend Ralf! Much appreciated!
Dead trees are certainly on the list @Glitch
