Need help making symbols

I am now entering a realm where I am completely out of my depth. I am entering the realm of symbol creation... and I am at a complete loss. Let me explain what I need, and hopefully someone can walk me through how to do this. I've tried reading the Tome on the subject, and unfortunately I'm even more confused than ever.

So, I'm mapping a wizards tower for the CG Feb. Mapping challenge. One of the requirements for my tower, is an observatory. Well, I've looked through every symbol catalogue I can find, and there are no telescopes to be found, at least not with what I have.

I also need to have a domed, glass roof with an opening for said telescope... that fit in with DD3 symbols, and I'm thinking vector rather than rastor, and as I said, I have no clue how to proceed. Anyone have any ideas?

There's a VERY old thread over at the Guild - at least 2 years old, possibly 3, and its called "Ethran: Merelan Observatory" (or something like that).

In that thread Bogie offered me the use of two Dundjinni telescope symbols, which unless they have been deleted by Bogie are still there. I never finished Merelan Observatory's top floor because something happened right then which rendered the maps useless to me (they were intended as book illustrations, but someone exploited them to contribute to an increased flow of traffic through his own FB Group page without even giving me credit - never mind asking permission), but I'm sure that Bogie would not have put those telescopes there if they could not be used by anyone but me.

As for the glass dome - There are... or at least I remember there being... several in the CSUAC (I really don't know these days because I don't have it or use it - I make all my own extra symbols and fills as you know). Failing that, and if you have the 2018 annual, the December issue has a couple of transparent domes that I made. One is featured in the publicity image for that issue.

Why would you need a glass dome to have a hole in it for the telescope?

If you read down the thread a bit you will see that someone suggested that you don't actually need to show the dome over the telescope at all

Some domes do fold back when a telescope is in use. Some just open a narrow widow in the dome.

Sue, I remember the observatory, once you mentioned it... if I remember correctly, some of us helped in that process . And yes, I remember you quitting the project because of the guy that stole our work... if I remember correctly, he took my castle and Horn & Stars tavern and he took some of Lorelei's work as well.

I'm surprised those telescopes never made it into the CSUAC...

And I think I've decided that, instead of a glass dome roof, which I've been trying to create, but can't seem to figure out how yet... I'm just going to show a magical 'forcefield' if you will, which I can do with a glow and some twinkling that are already a part of the CSUAC.

I think I may use that vertical telescope, however! Thanks for reminding me about the thread!

One of those telescopes at least is one of Grey Hawks, and he doesn't allow commercial use of his symbols, so that would explain why that one isn't in the CSUAC. As for the other one - who knows. The CSUAC doesn't contain every single last piece of art ever created by the Dundjinni forum users. It just contains an awful lot of it

If you have the 2018 annual I did a very small set of transparent domes in the December issue. There's even one that might satisfy your force field requirement - having no other structure than a base. Its really huge as well. I made it large enough to cover a small town.

It appears that both the telescopes are part of the newer version of the CSUAC (the one I never downloaded) - according to the most recent comment on your Guild thread.

Here is a version with a see-through dome. It's up to you to design the bottom though...

I probably made it for an elevation map.

thanks everyone! You have all given me some ideas, and things to think about when I get to that part in my map. I'm just not sure which one I'm going to do yet, but I will get there.

I was wanting to build out interior of an observatory..and was wondering if there are any kind of internal telescope symbols? For now at least I took the amazing transparent dome bitmap and did this.
