First Town Map for Critique

Ok so this is my first real attempt at a map with the mapping software. I've been playing around with the sheet effects in CC3 and have some success getting what I'd like out of them. I'm still having some issues with the land contours I think and also making it so that when the shadow effects are in use on the buildings and trees that they don't look like they are floating. Any critique or suggestions will be most welcome.

Ok this should link to the map without effects -

This should link to a picture of the map with effects -

Ok sorry wrong links lets try the two different pics again.

    I like it!!

    What sort of green colors did you use?

    Looks like its the same picture...?
  • Sorry bout that, links should go to the correct pictures now.

    The colours are just from the base pallet they are numbered from darkest to lightest 83,84,86,89,91.

    The rgb codes are;
    83: R(12), G(112), B(56), Hue(98), Sat (194), Lum(58)
    84: R(14), G(134), B(67), Hue(98), Sat (195), Lum(70)
    86: R(18), G(178), B(89), Hue(98), Sat (196), Lum(92)
    89: R(72), G(212), B(134), Hue(98), Sat (149), Lum(134)
    91: R(124), G(224), B(168), Hue(98), Sat (148), Lum(164)

  • thats a pretty nice town man....thanks for sharing ideas....
  • That is really really nice!
    It really gives the feel of a small remote village by the woods. I like the blur on the reservoir.
    Are those all base CC3 symbols?
  • No unfortunately I have used symbols from CD2. The original map was actually designed initially with CD2 then I ported it over to CC3 to make use of sheet effects etc and to get used to using CC3 rather than CC2. I know a very round about way of doing things, but I was delusional to begin with and not really sure what I was doing *lol*. As a run down this is what I did;

    Used RPG Town Generator to generate a overview of a small village/town (This is something I came across in FM8 as there was a script available with FM8 that imported the actual city file used by the generator and turned it into a basic map).

    Exported that as a BMP and used it as a background template for the town layout.

    Then just laid everything on the map starting from the ground up. The template is a CD2 template and the symbols are all CD2 I think, not sure where i got the trees from in all truth. I have access to the CSUART(?) and Dundjinni but don't think I used any of those symbols. Initially the map as without contour levels and I added them later as my map had a very flat look to it.

    All text on the road and sheet effects were all done with CC3. I'm currently adding layers for a key to buildings and a colour coded shading for building types (eg merchants/government/criminal/industries/Inns/Taverns etc).

    A very nice map with a nice rural feel to it. The trees look like they're from the Miscellaneous cateogry with CC2s standard city symbols. As an idea you may want to try out. You can also use the overland bitmaps in City maps done or ported into CC3, replace each contour colour with a different bitmap. You may also want to use a paint program to create additional shades for these bitmaps. Some of these can look quite good.

    A couple of simple ones with no effects can be found at

    to show you what I mean.
