Oooo... this is geeky... my first symbol!

A sparse attempt at emulating Schley, here is a mine cart. NOTE: I am no Schley...

Added a little shadow under and in the cart... I think this is a little better...

Note that you should be careful with adding shadows to symbols for use with CC3(+) (Especially "outside" shadows, CC3 can't generate shadows inside the symbol, like inside the cart here.). Generally, it is better to let the user of the symnol add these as sheet effects, because they can then control length, color, direction and transparency. Shadows added to the symbol itself tends to restrict how it can be used.

Here it is w/o the extra shadow. Originally, I added it as I felt the symbol lacked "grounding" (OK, picky artist...).

Most artists do that. And normally, that do make the symbol better, and it gives a better perspective of the symbols, because it can be used to indicate height through the length of the shadow. If you look at the Mike Schley symbols from SS4, you'll see that none of them have external shadows. This is one of the peculiars of designing symbols for CC3(+), since it has it's own system for directional shadows and lighting.
I find that the shadows are the main issues with symbols found elsewhere. I have this set of really nice symbols, but the artist even put shadows beneath the birds, making it nearly impossible to use them in a map.

Heed what Monsen says. One requirement we have for artists creating symbols for us is: don't do external shadows, as it messes with rotating them individually (if too directional) and our own effects.

No worries on the external shadows - won't be added.

And here's a tipped version with a broken wheel. Still working on making them more Schley-like, I think this is a little closer.

I used both Illustrator and Photoshop to draw them. I also have a Wacom tablet, which makes things a little easier too. I am an artist of sorts (http://jon-munson-ii.pixels.com), so I have the tools.

BTW, this is something I would not do - put shadows under an aerial object. A ground-based object I can understand because there is going to be some ambient shadow around the object regardless of lighting - it just helps to "ground" the object. Otherwise, it tends to look "floaty."
