CC3+ will not open

I've recently bought a new laptop and downloaded CC3+, the annuals and the free add-ons compliments of Mark Oliva at The Vintyri Project.... I've worked on the laptop with no problems. Today i opened it up and tried to open a map with no response, then tried to open the program itself with no response. I ran a repair of the program, and the update and still the program will not respond. Any ideas what happened???

CC3+ always reopens the last map on startup, so if there is a problem with the map, that could cause a problem starting. Try double-clicking on a map file, any one but the one you worked on last. That should cause CC3+ to open that file instead.

Negative. I have three maps saved on this laptop which have been opened on various days past....None of them will open

It may not help, but have you tried running the Update? After the problem manifested itself, that is.

yes, both the update and tried a repair of CC3+ to no avail.

What, exactly, happens when you try to open CC3+, both via the program icon and by clicking a map file?

Just to get the obvious out of the way; I assume you have tried rebooting your computer?

If you right-click the taskbar and choose the Task Manager option from the pop-up menu, and then try to open CC3+, does the Task Manager show  CC3+  or  fcw32.exe  in any of its lists?

Also, which version of Windows are you using?

Observation: So far this is identical to what happened before I had to do a complete reinstall a few weeks ago.

Windows 10 - which I abhore....btw....does anyone know how to make Cortana run off and die somewhere far far away from me and my laptop? And...no, i see absolutely NOTHING related to CC3+ in the Task Manager when i double click it

She's no biggy. I sorted her in less than 60 seconds just by shutting her app

What? Where? You got rid of C... or did you manage to open CC3?

It looks like I messed up a translation back when I was going the initial conversion from registry to XML things and my error handling in the face of that particular kind of error isn't as good as it should be. Removing the whole XML tag called "Dyn32 (FastCAD)" from CC3PlusCfg.xml should allow CC3+ to start again. The problem will come back whenever you use the Editing Options button on the main Options dialog, so you might want to keep a cleaned-up copy of CC3PlusCfg.xml handy if you use that feature (at least until the next update).

What is it with those control freaks at MS that they continue to try and impose their unspeakably irritating nanny-companions on us all? They must think we have no brains and cannot think without their help... or, its more sinister than that - they KNOW we have brains, and are afraid of what might happen if they allow us to use them too much :P

All I can say about this is that back in the days of MS-DOS Microsoft has persistently, and consistently, taken more and more control away from the causal user. This is why we no longer have as many computer hobbyists as back then. My thought is that Microsoft is trying to get to the point of complete dependency to the user. That's why they want everyone to use apps instead of launching programs.

And I refuse to live in an app driven world.

Well, Ed, I don't think the rest of us will ever let them get that far.

There will always be alternative OS platforms. MS know that, and they know the more heavy handed they get with us the weaker they will make themselves, as we start to metaphorically 'leave in droves' to side with the competition

Except that right now, there biggest competition is Apple... which is app driven. That is where this is all coming from.

Raspberry PIs run a version of linux. I have a desktop with MInt Linux on it. I haven't run those this year, but after I finish, I hope fairly soon, to have a workbench set up so I can do something with those computers.

If not for Everquest and Profantasy having software I want to use, I would likely have switched to Linux and never gone past WinXP.

Well Win 7 is a pretty good platform. I rarely have problems with it; but I *refuse* to upgrade to Win 10! I'll go to an Umbutu box first.
