Importing Fractal terrains to templates in CC3

Hi Everyone,

First post for me. Is there way to import from Fractal Terrains to a set template in CC3? I keep getting the error must be an uncompressed V6x CC2 file. I'm interested in exporting a continent to a mercator style map. Is this possible?

Thanks for any advice,

Jason

I just choose export to CC2 then opened it in CC3.

    Take a look here
that map was exported from FT Pro in Mercator style into your standard CC2 then I imported in CC3.

I had the settings so it looked like a line drawing first. In Basic Contour Settings I only have Draw Coast Outline checked with Outline color black. Intervals 10,000 feet (6 contours). This gives me a CC2 Pro map of just the coastal outline.
  • Thanks,

That's the type of map I want in that style. I've follwed your advice but I still run into the same problem. I cannot save using the mercator template using the save as custom template. I keep getting an umcompressed v6x cc2 is needed. I haven't had CC2 on my computer and looded it up again but it just doesn't seem to work at all. Maybe I have problems because I have Vista. The workaround I have been trying for this is to import as Bitmaps and trace but what is happening is when I zoom in to trace my bitmap for tracing disappears. Thanks for any help.
  • Try saving it to clipboard from CC2 (if you have it) or just from CC3 then open your template and paste from clipboard to the desired template.
  • In CC3 inTools click on Options. It will bring up a menu, now click on the FCW/FCT/FSC button which will bring up the options for these files, the option you want is for File Compression, it is selected by default. Deselect this then save the file you want to use for your FT exports under a different name. This will save an uncompressed version of the file.

In FT select this uncompressed file by editing the export to CC and it should work properly.

  • Okay, I'll admit I'm lost.

I watched the video series on creating maps, and it was fairly straightforward. So now I'm ready to go! If I follow what the person in the video does, from a new file, everything works great.

However! I'm trying to do the same thing with my Fractal Terrains files. I've created my world, exported it out to multiple CC2 files, and can open those files up in CC3. But then none of the features described in the video work...for instance, if I start with the "default landmass" in the upper left corner, it no longer does anything. When I try to create effects with sheets, similar to how they do it in the video, nothing happens. (Yes, I tried varying the size and intensity of the effect, and I made sure that the Merge sheet wasn't hidden...but I don't know how much you can trust me...obviously I'm doing *something* wrong.)

I'm assuming that Fractal Terrains saves the files with some different settings than a newly created CC3 file would have...but gadzooks am I getting frustrated with this. Any help would be *very* greatly appreciated.

I've attached a sample saved file to this message...if someone could even just give me an idea of what the heck I need do to get started, that would be great.

The culprit are the four buttons (A,T,C,R) in the bottom right corner. They are located on the map border layer, which causes the problem, since the drawing tools uses the entities on the map border to determine where the outside/inside of the map should be (Since they stop at the border if you try do draw outside).

    What you need to do:
    - Unhide the Map border layer
    - Erase the four buttons, OR move them to another layer (Make sure you get all components belonging to the buttons)
    - Optionally, draw a rectangle on your map border, on the edge of your map. This will allow you to utilize the "stop at map border" function of the drawing tools.

(Make sure you don't confuse layers with sheets. You refer to the Merge "sheet" above, but Merge is actually a layer)
  • Also don't forget that FT currently exports in CC2 format and that assuming you convert this to CC3 a lot of stuff will end up on the miscellaneous sheet which you will need to shift to the sheets you want them on. Typically I find that things like the scalebar and contours end up on the miscellaneous sheet wheras I personally like the scalebar on the map border sheet for instance.
