Missing and broken Varicolor Symbols in CA3

I'm trying to create characters in Character Artist 3, and am having some trouble. There appears to be some broken (and maybe also some missing) varicolor symbols. Does anyone have a fix for these issues (or know how to do a fix)?

Specifically, I'm trying to create a male snakeman character, using a different color other than the default (red). The body, arms, and legs all look fine, when I select the varicolor symbols. But when I go to do the head, one of the symbols doesn't seem right. There are three choices: the primary (non-varicolor version), the version that shades the entire head with the varicolor, and the version that shades the eyes with the varicolor. However, the one that is supposed to do the full head doesn't actually use my selected color. Instead, it appears locked into using a charcoal-grey color. None of the other monster heads have this problem (their varicolor versions work as expected). Also, the female version of the snakeman works as expected. Does someone have a fix for this, or know how to fix it?

Also, I noticed that I can't find a cyclops eye for the male monsters. But when I click on the female versions of the symbols, cyclops eyes shows up. Playing around with the selected symbols, I can find a male dwarf cyclops eye set, but nothing for the other "races". Are there some missing symbols regarding this? If so, has anyone created versions of these?

I don't know how to fix it but I can confirm that I was able to reproduce this issue with the snakeman head.

  • Okay, disregard the cyclops symbol issue. I figured out what I was doing wrong.

However, I'd still like help with the male snakeman head issue if anyone knows a solution or has a fix. Thanks.

Please post your solution so if others encounter the same problem they can fix it to. Thanks !
  • Well, from reading the Tome of Ultimate Mapping on how to create varicolor raster symbols, my guess would be that they forgot to make the Gray head transparent when they created it so it won't accept the new color you want to give it.

The only way I see to fix it would be to make a PNG of it and export it to Photoshop or Gimp and then follow the instructions in the Tome of Ultimate Mapping on creating varicolor symbols. Then import it back into Character Artist.
  • See my screenshot below:

Navigate to the C:\Program Files (x86)\ProFantasy\CC3\Symbols\CharacterArtist\CA3\BodyParts\MonsterMaleHeads folder

Change the file names of the highlighted images from "Snakeman Head vari_02_VH.png", Snakeman Head vari_02_HI.png, etc to Snakeman Head a vari_02_VH.png, etc.

Note the change is to add a small letter 'a' to the file name.

Also, always contact support to report errors so that they can make a fix to the installer. They don't always come by the forums every day.

Holy Debugging, Batman! That's quite the catch, Shessar!

However, making that change on my system (Win7 Pro 64bit) had no visible effect on the varicolor symbol when placed.

I did notice, however, that the other varicolor snakeman body parts, that change color entirely, do seem to be "...vari_02..." files.

Did you get this to work on your system?

Oops! I forgot to add that you have to rebuild the symbol catalog too.

See Ralf's post below for the official fix.

Thanks for doing my work Shessar, many thanks. ;)

You can also just unzip the attached file over your folder
    C:\Program File (x86)\Profantasy\CC3\Symbols\CharacterArtist\CA3\BodyParts\

Replace the first part of the path with your actual CC3 program folder location, if you are not using the default one.
