Borked re-install with Vintryi

I made the mistake of installing the Vintryi files to the program folder instead of the program data folder.
I did an uninstall (from the installer) and then reinstalled from the ground up: CC3+, CC3+ update, CD3 for CC3+. Then I followed the instructions and installed the Vintryi to the program data folder.

Two issue arose that I am hoping someone might be able to help with.

First, when I opened CC3+, I got the dreaded red X's on the welcome screen. But when I opened the tutorial fcw file from within the program data folder, it loaded, without any red x's. Then, when I launched from the desktop icon, no red x's. So that seemed to take care of it,but I am concerned that there is a surprise awaiting me down the road.

Second, when I attempt to access the fill styles, the majority are fine, but a large number of them are red x's.

Any suggestions on what I did wrong or how I can correct this?

Thanks.

First of all, for people other than Siladem who read this:

With CC3, the program and data folders usually are one and the same folder. Therefore, this is a CC3+ issue only.

If anyone is planning to install our free products for CC3+ but feels unsure about issues like these, PLEASE take time to read the installation instructions in the manual! If you're not sure what the data and program folders are, the manual gives you full instructions on how to determine that, complete with all possible installation screen shots.

Second of all: If any of you makes the same mistake as Siladem did, don't repeat his second mistake, reinstalling all of the ProFantasy software. There is no reason to do that. There is nothing in our products that will overwrite any of the CC3+ files in the program folder. There also is nothing that will damage content of the program folder. Installing the Vintyri material there simply will waste space on your system drive, nothing else.

If you do make this mistake and you want the wasted space back, simply erase the Vintyri content that you put into the program folder and then reinstall the Vintyri material into the data folder.

If you feel shaky about this erase operation:

    1. DO NOT erase individual files in the CC3Plus folder.

    2. DO NOT erase the folders Filters and ImageMagick.

    3. DO ERASE these folders (and nothing else):

    Bitmaps
    CD3 Restore
    Documentation
    Menu
    Symbols
    System
    Toolbar Backups

These all are Vintyri folders and serve no purpose in the CC3+ Program Folder.

    But now, to Siladem's questions:

The red Xs tell you that in your new installation some of the objects that are in the material you're opening are not installed where they should be and, therefore, CC3+ cannot find them.

Remy or Ralf or someone else may have a better suggestion than the following one, but if what had happened to you had happened to me, I would:

    1. Run the CC3+ setup file again, running it as an administrator. This means clicking the file CC3PlusSetup.exe with right mouse key and choosing the option "Run as Administrator."

    2. Pick the repair option after the setup starts.

If the objects that produce the red Xs are CD3 objects, repeat these steps with the CD3 setup program, again running it as an administrator and picking the repair option.

    Thanks for your quick response.
I tried the reinstall and it didn't work. In fact, new problems have arisen that may need a Ralf or Remy weigh in. I'll detail that below, but first a question relating to Vintryi - the red x's all seem to have something in common. When I look at them in fill style properties I see:

    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Overland\AshTerrain_01_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Structures\BeaverTail_01_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Overland\Brush_01_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Overland\Brush_02_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Overland\BurntForest_01_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Structures\Copper_01_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Overland\MountainGreen_01_VH.PNG

Some that don't have the problem:
    @Bitmaps\Tiles\Overland\evil medium_VH.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\City\CD3\CD3_Clasical_Roof_HI.PNG
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\City\CD3\CD3_Gothic_Roof_HI.PNG

And one which worked last night, but doesn't this morning:
    #Bitmaps\Tiles\Digital\Settlements\Cobblestone_03_HI.PNG

I am wondering if I should try to reinstall the Vintryi from scratch - and if I do, is there a proper sequence? Do I need to remove anything prior?

    Now for the other problem
When I tried to run the CC3+ installer (version3.67), I got a message "could not access network location $PROGRAMDIR$". I then have to force quit out as it seems to get stuck in a loop trying to access it.
So then I ran the CC3+ updater and that ran fine. But nothing was corrected.
    Any suggestions? And again, thanks.

Your Vintyri problem relates only to the Fills & Textures collection 4.2. It appears that you have a mix of the CC3 version and the CC3+ version installed in CC3+. I say that, because CC3+ uses "@ where CC3 uses #." However, I have no idea how that occurred. I just downloaded our setup, reinstalled it and it seems to work fine. As far as I can see, it has no areas where there is a "#" where a "@ should be, and I when I check the properties of the fills that you listed, I always get a @."

Probably the best thing to do is to make sure that you're installing this file into CC3+:

    http://www.vintyri.org/downloads/vss_ft_4_2_cc3plus.zip

And then simply reinstall this one ZIP file and not all of Vintyri. That should solve the problem mentioned above, but if it doesn't, let us know.

I haven't had this problem myself, and Ralf or Remy may be able to give you better tips. However, the people with whom I'm in contact who have had such a problem have resolved it by turning off their anti-virus program while running the installation.

  • Mark -

I'm afraid it didn't work. But as I've found out that I'll be getting a new PC for the holiday, I'll be doing a whole new install of everything this next weekend and having learnt what I did wrong the first time, it shouldn't be an issue next time.

One question though - when installing the Vintryi items, is there a best practice for the order in which it is done? Should I install symbol set 2 then 3, etc... and then should I install fills & textures, or does it not matter at all.

Again thanks for your help. It's awesome that you guys do this.

It shouldn't matter, but you'll probably get the smoothest installation if you install Symbol Set 1 last.
