How do you make a blow up of a smaller portion of your map

I have read the tome of mapping the big instruction book, and tried to follow the instructions and I keep getting the whole world map when I want just a small portion around two towns. I know it is pretty easy. when I tried to search the forums there was nothing like what I was requesting. I am sure it is pretty easy but for some reason I am not getting what I am looking for. Can someone help or direct me to a place that has that answer.

Follow up. I tried to copy the two villages onto a smaller map so I could blow them up and work on the detail and it put the villages way into the white portion of the map not the smaller map. Am I missing something?
