CC3+ User Guide "Converting Old Maps" - How do you select the Piadra_Gate bitmap?

Hey there gang. Effectively brand-new to CAD drawing, love world-building as a hobby and am very interested in mastering CC3+ (in time). Going through the Campaign Cartographer 3+ User Guide and have run into an issue with Select.

Now, on the various sample and tutorial maps, I've practiced selecting, de-selecting, zooming in/out with zoom windows, etc. and I've gotten passable at it...until I came to the "Converting Old Maps" tutorial in the User Guide.

I successfully insert the Piadra_Gate bitmap (Step 4), Zoom in (Step 5)...and then I get stuck (Step 6).

In Step 6: "Click Move then click the edge of the bitmap to select it."

I cannot, for the life of me, click the edge of the bitmap! I've zoomed way in, etc. but cannot find the edge to select it. I know I haven't selected it because I'm watching the command-line and the number of entities selected does not change from "0".

FWIW, I've had difficulty selecting symbols in general and usually use a "select window" technique and cut across the boundary of symbol to ensure I snag it. So far, that does not seem to work with this bitmap entity.

So...what is the trick? I've found work-arounds by not following the exact instructions in the User Guide, but I'm looking at this as a "technique" that I should learn so I'm interested in how all of you are accomplishing this step.

Thanks for any assistance!

Is it on a frozen layer ? If so, it needs to be unfrozen to select it.
  • Thanks for the response Jim. Nope. The bitmap itself is not on a frozen layer (I double-checked; its on the BITMAP Sheet on the TEMPORARY layer which is NOT Frozen). I've had success by freezing the MAP BORDER layer so that the Map Border does not interfere with the selection, but that was intentional. The trouble may be that I'm just trying to follow the instructions too literally.

The upside is that I'm getting much better at selecting entities...I think I've learned just about every technique known to man to select an entity today. :)

    I can:

    * Use the Select "banding" box (clicking two points to draw a box that intersects the object to be selected)
    * Select the edge of most symbols (when zoomed in enough)
    * Un-select symbols with CTRL
    * List Info on objects, identify the bitmap and then select it by Tag #
    * Freeze the Map Border Layer (effectively rendering the Map Border not able to be selected) and then select the bitmap with the "banding" box approach
    * Modify the instructions in the User Guide and insert the bitmap at 1,1 instead of 0,0 so that it is easier to select

The only thing I can't seem to do is actually select the edge of the bitmap when it is inserted into the map at 0,0. Entities within the Map Border itself get selected along with it and I end up with 5 entities selected instead of 1 - and then have to mess around with de-selecting them.

    Thanks for the input.

If the bitmap is on the TEMPORARY layer and freeze everything BUT this layer, can you then select the bitmap via clicking on its edge?
  • Thanks for the response Ralf.

Yes. If I freeze everything, I can easily select the Bitmap. Freezing other layers is not part of the instructions provided in the User Guide so I was attempting to master the technique as indicated in the User Guide. Based upon your response, I assume that freezing the layers is actually how it is supposed to be done in this case?

Freezing layers is one option. There are multiple ways to handle selection of entities in CC3, and the most important IMHO is to be aware of the various ways to do selections, so you can pick whatever works best for any given situation. If I knew the bitmap was the only thing on the TEMPORARY layer, I would probably have done a select by layer instead, since this is quicker than going the freezing route.
  • Thanks Monsen. I think that is probably one of the few "select" techniques I did *not* try yesterday. :) Was very focused on trying to master a "direct" select of the object; in the end, it worked out because I got a very in-depth view of the various ways you can select entities in CC3+! I call that a win.

I'm just starting down this journey but I think I've got another post for my blog at least: www.funnyshapeddice.com

    Appreciate the idea.
