Importing an existing drawing into fractal terrains

I have an electronic copy of a world map that I would like to import into fractal terrain so I can gain all of the detail that this program has to offer....... Anyone have great step by steps or advice to help out a newbie?

That's a difficult thing to do, and you'll never get all the detail that a true FT3 world provides, but there are some things you can do.

Check out Old Guy's tutorial on the topic, as well as my own (older) article.

  • How about opening a really old Fractal Terrains file?
The file stamp on the attached file is 1/28/2001
I created that with Fractal Terrains, probably version 1.0
When I try and open it with Fractal Terrains 3, it looks like it opens it, but nothing shows up on the screen.
    No errors, just solid blue

Unfortunately, FT3 isn't fully compatible with FT files created with software versions prior to version 1.23. FT Pro was somewhat compatible, but the oldest versions of FT had a serious computation error that were clock-speed and core-count dependent (the FT Pro compatibility mode recreated the bug, but results were spotty at best).
  • Is there any way to import into FT3? I have the old FT file, also the *.dte files, as well at bitmaps and CC3 files?

If your world was created from binary files such as .dte files, it should be simple to create a new world using that file. File>>New, binary world, select the .dte file, and off you go. You might be able to use some of your bitmap data as image overlays for the world as well if they are in the equirectangular projection.
  • It has been quite a while. I remember creating a world using the old Fractal Terrains. I then used Wilbur and some other software. I was able to create a spinning globe animation. I still have those BMP files, the .dte and so on.
I have an elevation BMP. How do I get something like that into FT3?

  • Thank you so much for posting the two guides as well as thanking those who made them. Took a fair amount of work to finally get an almost workable product. Now that I have all the proper programs in place I can perfect the elevations map and see how good it gets. Also glad to support Profantasy with a purchase of four of their programs.
  • I have a CC3 world map, with all the elevations coloured different colours. Is there a way I can import this into FT3? My map is the AE Hemispheres one, so it would need to go into the AEhemispheres projection of FT3.
  • Use the two walk thru's posted above.
The fractal terrain needs to have a file imported that is a greyscale topography . I converted all my landmass to white and then imported it into the Wilbur program. It was very flat. I am now working on a better topography so it generates better elevations.

I think it would work better to import it into CC3/CC3+ and modify it there. FT3 is for creating fractal worlds.
