How do I copy a continent from one map and paste to a new one?

I have a map of a city on a coast line. I'd like to copy that city and coast, but I don't need the ocean and nearby islands. I hope to paste this material to a new map. Any hints?

You save as to another filename, and trim out what you don't need.
