Missing symbols and more in DD3

I am following along with Joe Sweeney's DD3 tutorial, and it seems I am missing a bunch of symbols. He uses symbols (an idol and a column for instance) that I don't seem to have. I've checked some of the other symbol catalogs and one I can tell symbols are missing in the weapon catalog. There are no weapons except for two ballistas. (No swords, axes, clubs, etc.)

The columns I do have have an issue in that the intersection point is on the edge of the column and not in the middle (does that make sense?) so the column never lines up with the middle of the column on the middle of the grid point. Is there a method align the columns to do this? Do the missing columns have the center spot in the center of the column (In the tutorial his columns align as I expected) or do I have to make the symbol? Can a symbol like that be made? Having not made any symbols yet I'm not even sure what questions to ask. Anyway, I need help.

Thanks!

  • I'm having the same issue. I thought the reason might be that the tutorial was made using an expanded symbol set, i.e. a greater range of symbols than appears in DD3 alone. But, I also purchased SS2 (Fantasy Floorplans), and the symbols available via the symbol icons haven't changed since I installed SS2, where I thought intuitively that I'd suddenly have a much larger base of symbols to choose from (as Joe Sweeney appears to have in his tutorial). I can see the expanded range of symbols by navigating to the SS2 folder and subfolders using Windows... but I hope there's a more user-friendly way to access those symbols than manually navigating to them every time.

Create a map, put all symbols into it you want to use in making a starship. Go to the symbols manager and save them as a symbol set.

Open a starship template, make whatever changes you need to make to create the starships you want. Save it in your template folder, name it something.

That is what I have done to make it easier for me to turn out all the maps I do.

Can you post a screenshot of the symbols in Joe's tutorial that you're missing, or post the link to the tutorial so we can see which symbols you're referring to?

  • I believe tutorial 1c is the first we see the symbol menu...

At about the 1 minute mark he's showing a menu of doors and at about the 2 minute mark he's showing a menu of temple items (statues, etc). In both cases the list of symbols is much greater than DD3 seems to have (unless as stated there's a way to expand the DD3 symbol catalog available via the symbol icons).
  • Dogtag,

It's a video tutorial linked on the tutorials page on the profantasy website. It is linked to a youtube video. Here's the address:

Tutorial 1c: Dungeon Mapping with Dungeon Designer - Basics

There are some symbols missing from the wall features catalog: a number of different doors starting at about 50sec
There are more missing from the Temples and Statues catalog:
The idol he uses starting at about 2:00 minutes
The pillar used starting at about 4:25 (The aforementioned column I do have doesn't line up the same way as in the video)
The slab used starting at about 5:20
The lava pit from the Elemental catalog at about 5:40

The symbols I do have appear much cruder than in the video.

    Thanks for looking at this.

Well, I just tried creating a dungeon using a DD3 template, as Joe describes in his tutorial. Lo and behold, clicking the catalog buttons loaded DD Pro symbols instead of DD3 symbols! That may be what's happening to you. Try this and see if it helps:
    1. From the menu, select Symbols>Master Settings Filters.
The Master Filters dialog displays. It should have a list of one or more filters to use when searching for Dungeon Designer catalog file names.
    2. Make sure Filter 1 is set to DD3 Color and that it is selected.
Actually, I don't know that DD3 Color needs to be the first filter, but it should be selected. On mine, Filter 2 (DD Pro Filled) was selected instead and I had to click the radio button for Filter 1.
    3. Click OK.
      The dialog box closes.
    4. Click the Wall Features catalog button image.
The correct DD3 catalog symbols should now load. Similarly, they should now load for any of the catalog buttons that have DD3 symbols (e.g., I don't think DD3 has a walls/geomorphs catalog).
    I hope that helps.

Calling all SmartPeopleTM! Does anyone know why my DD3 symbol Master Filter settings were discombobulated and displaying DD Pro symbols (filter #2 in the master filter dialog) instead of the proper DD3 symbols (filter #1)? I don't know if this is what rhuiren and pauldj are experiencing too, but it's what happened to me and I'm curious.

    Thanks,

I can't recreate this problem here, neither the missing doors, nor the wrong master filter loading, sorry.

Rhuiren and pauldj, it sounds a bit like you are using the limited CC3 dungeon style and it's small selection of symbols. Are you sure you started a new map based on one of the DD3 templates, not the "CC3 Dungeon" one?
  • Dogtag's suggestions exactly fitted the bill for me. DD3 had filter 2 instead of filter 1 set and changing it fixed the problem. +1 for Dogtag, thanks!

Btw Dogtag, how did you know to go look at the master filter setting to fix the problem? I'm sorry you had encountered the same problem but thrilled you knew how to fix it.

    Excellent! Glad it worked.

I recently had a similar problem with something else and Ralf walked me through it. Before he did, I didn't even know those settings existed! So when I saw I was getting DD Pro symbol catalogs for a DD3 map, I checked those settings on a hunch. Woot! Anyhow, I'm glad I was able to pay it forward.

Now, if we can only figure out why it happened. To both of us. Personally, I wonder if it's something to do with the DD3 templates.

    Cheers!

    Ralf,

For the record, I "reset" CC3 by opening an overland map and placing a symbol. Then I created a new map based on the pre-defined dungeon template, 200' x 160' battlemat shaped.fct. Same issue!

So, I reset it again as above (overland map... placed symbol...). Then I created a new map where I decide the settings myself, DD3 Dungeon. Not only does this work properly, as expected, but I noticed something else.

Using the pre-defined template, I had to manually click the DD3 menu button to get the DD3 catalog buttons and menu options (everything was still CC3/Overland until I did). But when I picked the Decide settings myself option, everything automatically set itself for DD3.

Just wanted to say the same thing happened to me. I bought/installed DD3 today and was going through the essentials walk though, and when it came time to add the symbols, all the ones available to me looked very primitive in comparison to the rest of the map (and didn't look like the symbols as shown on the next example map). Came on the forum to see what might be wrong, saw this post, and went to the symbol manager. Same thing. DD2 Pro symbols had the button marked, not DD3. Changed that and the problem went away.

I've had CC3 for a while, and hadn't really dug into it. In the past week or so I picked up a few programs, including some source maps like Castles that are CC2 based. In looking around, I see that there is an install order that is recommended that I hadn't followed, so I don't know if that might be somehow tripping the DD2 symbol issue - just a flyer of an idea.
