The World Rivers regional maps

These two I did as regional maps for a larger one (link is below).
Traeconia region is Black and White because I wanted to print it out and I only have a BW printer at the moment. plus, I think it still looks good even in BW.
That map also has no legend because I did it as a separate file and tapped it on when I printed it out. If you want to see the legend I can post the link.
Suphsure region I don't need to print yet. hopefully I will have a color printer by that time; it uses the John Roberts Style (my fav!)
Cardonia Region uses the Herwin Wielink style. I like John Roberts art more, but Herwin has many more symbols to use.

let me know what you think. the Main map was my first map with CC3. I would like to think I have been improving.

The rest of these are maps of towns and dungeons for individual adventures I run in my game. just thought I would share them.

Great work, I love both maps though they are so different in style.

P.S.: I made your link clickable for easier access.

    Hi Soldyne,

For what it's worth, I think your technique has grown quite a bit. I like your first map, but your regional maps look great! I especially like your forests, and some of your coastlines look awesome (on all 3 maps).

    Bravo!

  • Thanks for the "clickable ness". I wasn't sure how to do that... and the files are quite large in size so I didn't want the pics directly in the post.

I also think my technique has improved. but, I have to give a lot of credit to the annuals (especially the john roberts style, its just so awsome!) and of course to all the great people here on the forums. I learned of my techniques from looking at other peoples maps, which is why I wanted to share mine; especially the concept of making rivers larger as they get further down stream. its takes extra effort but it really pays off in the end.

I plan on doing regional maps for the rest of the main world too. at least 6-7 more. I also plan on using some other styles to experiment with.
  • Hello,

I really like your maps, and the way you blurred out the outside of region parts. However, I will make two small remarks:
    - On your black-white regional map, there is a symbol that, I guess, must be used to represent fields (for instance, just east of the lake). But I think that it looks fuzzy & disturbing to the eye. I don't know how to improve it though...
    - On the colour map, the fjords at the south seem a little bit too pointy to me. I think that maybe decreasing the fractalization scale (the left/right arrows while drawing) on those might make them look more natural.

for the fuzzy farmland the only way to fix it would be to increase the resolution of the jpg save file. its currently set to 3000x4000 and takes about 5 minuets to render (3 passes). I could re-save it to 8000x6000 but that takes about 15 minuets (10 passes) and the file size is about 9MB, even for a jpg. when I printed it out with 5x5 sheets it came out quite clear though which was the intent.
[edit] ok, I went ahead and uploaded an HD version of the map with the 8000x6000 resolution. I used a 50% quality jpg format which is still better visualy than the 100% 4kx3k version. its 3mb so I hope you have a good connection [edit]

I also agree that the fjords were a little pointy but I was trying to trace an already existing region from another map and the John Roberts style default land mass is actually a combination function with a solid filled polygon and a hollow polygon as a boarder. when I try to manipulate the polygons after creation (to either add, remove, move a node or add fractilization) it only affects one of the two objects and then the other object is off center. also, it took me about half an hour just to get the land mass to match the region zoom trace and I didn't feel like re-doing it.

I have two other fjord-like areas in my world to do zooms on, so I will certainly try to improve my technique on them.

  • Added some new maps on the first post. still experimenting with different styles.
  • yet another map using the 13th Age style. its a bit minimalist for my taste, but, it suits the region being a giant desert.

so far, I like the art of John Roberts, but, the Herwin Wielink set just has so many different symbols to use, so I think that will be my go to style from now on.

  • Added another map. This is the last major region in the world. I plan on creating at least 3 - 4 more of the lesser regions and then I will work on a world wide map.

  • New map is up. This is a sub-region of the Suphsure area. Its a hilly, cold climate, lots of fjords and I went with a Germanic naming convention.
