Greneborg, CD3 city

This is my first map using CD3. I selected Jon Roberts style. I posted an earlier overland map and its located on the south coast of Spegelsjön on that map.

Enjoy, and any comments are very appreciated!

  • Really nice map with a fantasy feel. If you want go for a more realistic setup, I think it could use more densely built up quarters like your Northwest. Currently two thirds of your city are representative buildings and representative houses, which is fine for heroic fantasy, but a bit off for more realistic things. I assume the big round tower at the baron's castle is for some sort of flying creatures. It looks strange otherwise. The harbour might be protected by the walls. I know that this wasn't always the case historically, but given the shape of your city that would mean only an extra 30 metres of walls for the chance of being supplied by sea during a siege. Certainly not a must, but it would make sense unless the harbour is strictly for poor fishermen.

All in all a very nice map that really makes the different character of the quarters stand out clearly.
  • I like this map as well! It is easy to see where the 'upper' and the 'lower' city are, and I like the semi-chaotic placement of the houses.

But as an RPG player, I do have some questions about this town. Feel free to ignore these if they don't fit in your worldview!
    - Are the plots ringed with hedges within the city walls the only place where food is grown? Would that be enough to feed the Baron's retinue and all the soldiers? I would expect extensive plots outside of the city itself, with the ones inside the city only for emergency food in case of a siege or something like that.
    - Greneborg is situated in a peninsular on the Spagelsjon lake. From here, you could dominate all shipping on the lake and even extract tribute from all the towns on the shores of the lake. Especially since the Baron seems to have all those soldiers around! I would expect a navy harbour, not only a fishing fleet. And the navy harbour would be more ideally situated on the north side of the peninsula. Or is there an outpost there to serve as a lighthouse and early warning post (which might make a good adventuring location)?

Cities are hard and this one looks great.
  • Thanks for feedback!

@BlindMapMaker: The world is leaning towards heroic fantasy, but many of the buildings to the southeast are thought to be living quarters for the richer and upper middle class. The round tower is the main keep within the castle. There weren't any good symbol for this in the style so I constructed one from the tower symbol and road bitmap fill and some shadows added. I'm not completely satisfied with it even though it come out much better on bigger renderings. Anyone know any suitable better symbol? The harbor is on lower, more stony and unsuitable for building terrain. Also, it is only a lake within the same country which is very calm (Spegelsjön = Mirrorlake translated, because its so calm). So even though there is some trading, it is limited.

@Fub: - It is actually a graveyard :) There are several villages around the town. These villages has a lot of plots supporting the town.
    - Naval is hardly a threat as the baronies around the lake lack ability to have any substantial navy (they do have some, but mostly to protect merchants). Since the lake is so calm they often need rowing. The arch enemy of this barony is also the barony Kraqland to the east, and the town was founded where the keep was, which position was not planned for naval purposes. But an outpost to the north was a great idea! I'll probably include that in my regional map for Ernmark (under production).

I have aimed at a certain number of citizens when doing this map. It would be interesting if any/all of you could give an opinion what you think is plausible (before I say what I thought). Most of the buildings in the finer areas are two story buildings, some three story. Most of the buildings in the poorer areas are one story, with a few two story buildings. Even a rough estimate would be very interesting to hear.

    Thanks again!

I really like this map, the way you did it really encourages to visit it and know it's history.

About history, how old are the walls? They look very new because outside the fishing/boat activities, the whole city fits inside the walls. There might be some exceptions but usually an industrious city doesn't stay long in-walls and more sooner than later buildings begin to grow outside the walls. Consider adding some houses outside the walls unless there is a good reason they stay inside of course!

I'm really not an expert of inhabitants density, perhaps this free guide could help you. I just notice there are almost as many graves as there are buildings, with few space for extras.

But even as it is now, it's a great map!

The only thing I'm not sure about this beautiful map is the font choice for the key and title.
