Battle Map Cliff Help

I am trying to do a battle map that has a cliff going over into the ocean below. I tried layering a couple different terrain types on top of one another and fading them out, then adding a glow and shadow to the lower layer but it still doesn't look quite right. Any suggestions for how to do a cliff in a battle map would be great aside from creating an actual symbol art asset.

  • Couple ideas....try adding a slight blur to the ocean sheet to indicate that it is of different elevation...might want to also redraw the actual cliff edge with more irregularities to give it a more natural look...

    Personally, I like deep shadows in my maps, so I would say go harder with the glow effects on the cliff...say a black outer glow with a strength of 0 and size of 15 and then another black outer glow with a strength of 1 and size of 5 (size all depends on the total size of your map).

    Another idea (which requires a lot more effort) is to rework your terrain so that the angle of the cliff is not vertical (i.e. so that you can see some of the cliff moving down towards the water). Doing that would require several sheets with different edge fade inner and inner glow effects...
