Installing add-ons and updates

So! Haven't posted in ages. I never solved the problems I was having last time I posted (which was months ago), with various drawing tools acting up... And I no longer have any desire to. Because some time after this began, my main computer (where CC3 was installed) began started having some serious issues, and I ended up building an entirely new one (it was time to upgrade anyway).

So now that I finally have some free time again, I've decided to re-download CC3 and get back to my mapping projects, but I'm confused about one thing regarding installation. I've seen in the FAQ that it is recommended to install "add-ons" before updating the base program (i.e. the "CC3 update 10" that's available alongside the download of the base program setup). So, if I understand correctly, one would want to install the base program, then install add-ons such as, say, Cosmographer, or the Annuals, before installing the update. Is that the case? Right now, I have nothing other than CC3 itself (downloaded but not yet installed), but I am absolutely planning to get some Annuals, and possibly Cosmographer down the line. But in the meantime, I want to install CC3 and play around with it again by itself. Should I install update 10? If I do so and then later buy add-ons, do I need to uninstall and reinstall the whole thing to properly install them?

Thanks for any assistance.

Some add-ons sometimes have issues installing on some systems if CC3 is not up to the latest patch level, so my way of doing it is usually CC3 --> Latest Patch --> Add-Ons --> Latest Patch again (To update the add-ons)
  • Hmm, so, for the moment, I'll want to install the program and the CC3 update 10 patch, and then when I get any Annuals or other add-ons, just install them and then install the patch again?

And thanks Monsen, shoulda known it'd be you jumping in to help as usual XD

Only install the Update 10 afterwards if you are experiencing problems like symbol catalogs not loading or similar.

Sorry for the huge delay, some stuff came up that pushed all of this to the side.

Ok, I'm a bit confused... Ralf, when you say only install Update 10 afterward if I'm having trouble, did you mean:

-only install update 10 after CC3 if I'm having problems? Meaning, install CC3 by itself, and then only install update 10 at ALL if there are issues?

    OR did you mean:

-install CC3, install update 10, install annuals (in that order, as per Monsen), and then - at that point - only install update 10 again IF there are problems after installing the annuals?

Just want to make things easy on myself as I FINALLY get back into this program, and so I want to make sure I'm understanding here. Thanks!

The current CC3 installer is already at v3.42, meaning the update is not technically necessary. Some of the older add-ons (especially the compatibility updates) can confuse the install a bit (introducing older menu files or dlls) - if that happens installing Update 10 on top of everything will fix it.

So it's your first interpretation I meant: Only install Update 10 after CC3 if you're having problems in CC3.

But it won't hurt if you install CC3 Update 10 anyway, it just doesn't make any changes.
  • Got it! Thanks =)

The main thing I'm thinking about getting in the immediate is Annual #4 from 2010, for that "Modern Political" map style, since my main project right now is a fictional country in a real-world setting. Dunno if that one is old enough to potentially be a problem, but we'll see.
