Symbols Project Update: Chromatic Dragons Anyone?

Hi Guys.

I started getting bored drawing up mountains and dead trees and what not, and I had a Dragon itch (no - it's not THAT kind of dragon itch - I don't use public restrooms, lol), and so I decided to do some more Dragon symbol drawings until I mentally / creatively regrouped for the mundane stuff.

Now I already had the "generic" Dragon symbols - but it occurred to me that a lot of folks still play D&D / AD&D / D&D3-d20, sooooo - I figured that it wouldn't be a bad idea to do more specific Dragon Types. I drew out Black, Blue, Green, Red, and White Dragon symbols, and a nice little Wyvern... I didn't do a Tiamut symbol though, although I will if you guys want me to. These are the classic Chromatic Dragon types from D&D / AD&D. I'll probably draw up some metallic dragons to, since the set really isn't complete without them I don't think. Constuctive criticism welcomed, but be gentle, lol.

  • Very nice indeed sir =). I would be BEST to have 2 or 3 variations in position for each =).

    Again, congrats.

I was thinking of doing that Mateus090985, and thank you. I "might" draw positional variations - depending on if whether or not I'm to lethargic, lol.

    Varicolor? That would be interesting.

I was not even aware that there WERE "Gem" dragons. A lot's changed since 1989, lol.

Guess so. I checked my monstrous manual, and it is dated 1993. I don't know about their history before that year, although I don't think that were their first appearance though. (Edit: I managed to trace them back to 1992, but that I as far I could manage.)

The chromatic ones I remember from about 1985 are supposed to be based on various gems like beryl. It was in a Dragon magazine article. There was also an orange dragon in the magazine. I think it was the same issue, but a different article. Something about underpowered dragons. Ah, the article was called 'True Dragons'. Tough monsters. I think they would make great symbols.

Many of the Gem Dragons are psionic based and others are from Forgotten Realms

Actually Jim - the monster icons I am doing are based on the old Monster Manual 1st Edition Vol. 1 stuff, And I'm doing these icons in a way that is inspired by the Late, Great David Sutherland III's artistic style (see Lamia graphic below). David Sutherland's art from those old tomes had a magic that the refined, new stuff just doesn't capture. I loved it. I can't do it quite as shaded and detailed as his stuff, or as refined, because map scaling and minimizing detail is an issue for CC3 visual effectiveness and usefulness. In other words - I have to try to make the icons look cool, but at the same time - I have to keep them as simple as I can detail wise. The stuff I have been doing is inspired by the original late 1970s - 1980s TSR material.

I am a 2nd edition player myself, there is where the gem dragons originated (Amethyst, Crystal, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz). I don't think they made the transfer over to 3rd ed and further, which is why they weren't in Joachim's list, and unfortunately, why you probably won't find them in a free/open resource.

I sort of suspected something along those lines. I'm familiar with the D&D "golden age" stuff - but the new stuff I'm not.

    Found some pics here :

Googling with d&d 4e "dragon type" can yield more results.
Anyway is D&D compatibility an issue ? Perhaps you could just draw various poses with a varicolor sheet ?

Well - yeah - I could draw a "generic" dragon in maybe four different poses and make it varicolor - but I can't help but to think that that would somehow be "cheating", because every dragon type has differences besides just color - like number of horns, types of wings, length of neck, types of tails, etc.. I am OBSESSED with the concept of user options, that's why the total number of symbol graphics I have done thus far is up to 997 so far and definitely growing, lol :). - Thanks for the link also brother!
  • You're more than welcome, given the usage you'll probably make of it :))
