Gemma: The Land of Shattered Gates - Herwin Wielink style

So, some friends of mine are in the process of starting a new forum game, set in a nordic series of islands with a total landmass roughly equivalent to Scandinavia. The idea being that each player takes the role of one faction in this gameworld and tries to lead their people to glory or ignominy. Probably the latter. With lots of RP and shenanigans going on to liven things up as the turns progress.

Anyway, the original map was thus.

With each faction's holdings split into different provinces as below:

And being the mad fool that I am I took it upon myself to make a "pretty" version of the map using CC3. Partly because it would help a lot with the flow of the game as the Admin won't need to guess what sort of terrain will be where on the fly, and also because I've been dying for an excuse to use the Herwin Wielink style set on a large scale. The first stage is now pretty much done with all the basic terrain put down. The next stage is going to be adding the towns, cities, any other places of interest that I can add using symbols from other sets and then the names for provinces, landmarks, cities, rivers and islands. I'm also planning on using the borders tool to mark out the provinces, though that said I may modify the effects somewhat to fit it in with the rest of the style.

Anyway, here is stage 1, bearing in mind this is a huge file at nearly 50mb:

  • Lovely map, only thing I could comment on are the rivers that run into the sea at certain points.

But you only see that when zooming in

Thanks! I must admit I did not notice that the rivers did that as without the effects turned on they do rather disappear into the ocean. I shall have to see about shortening the rivers it seems!

  • Awesome Map.
You may also could rescale the forest texture a bit.
I assume my PC would freeze, if I tried to render such a large scaled map. :P
I looking forward to see stage 2. :)

    Thanks for the kind words!

I did wonder whether I should make the forest texture a little smaller, I shall have to add that into the list of things to do for stage 2. Which may be a bit further along than I thought it would be as the game Admin has decided to save time by marking out the various towns and castles on the map as players ask for them or they become required by wars. Luckily we're all an inquisitive and warmongering bunch so I suspect I'll have a full and workable settlement list to add on in a couple of weeks!

And don't worry this map was entirely too large for me to render all at once and did make my computer freeze up and beg for mercy when I first tried it. So I had render it out one quarter at a time and then used GIMP to connect the four images together. Which was a bit of a pain if I'm honest, but at the same time was rather necessary. Alas I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew when it comes to making maps, I'm about an eight of the way through one map that is about the same size as South America at the minute, and the scale is really far too detailed.
