!!! DELETED THE MAPS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY OLD !!!

Now it's time for some upgrade =). I have rearrange some islands and have put some more (they are small and cannot be seen in this scale). I am still in the hard work of doing my heght contours. My current palete colour is this one:

    LANDMASS - COLOUR 86
    500m - COLOUR 87
    1 000m - COLOUR 88
    1 500m - COLOUR 89
    2 000m - COLOUR 90
    2 500m - COLOUR 91
    3 000m - COLOUR 92
    3 500m - COLOUR 107
    4 000m - COLOUR 106
    4 500m - COLOUR 105
    5 000m - COLOUR 104
    5 500m - COLOUR 103
    6 000m - COLOUR 102
    7 000m - COLOUR 250
    8 000m - COLOUR 251
    9 000m - COLOUR 252
    10 000m - COLOUR 253
    11 000m - COLOUR 254
    12 000m - COLOUR 255

And here is my world view and 5 "zooms" of the areas that I put more effort in the contours lines and 1 zoom of my "island fragmented area". Tell me what you think please =)

!!! DELETED THE MAPS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY OLD !!!
  • I'm following this thread since the first post, but never answered (yes, you can call me lazy).
However, you now put me in a dead end, and I can't hold my words anymore...
I have two distinct feelings about your map.
First, and most important... your coastline is plain awesome in most parts. In particular that "island fragmented" portion of it. It looks (more or less) natural, quite detailed and incredibly interesting. Well done!!
On the other hand, your mountains fall in that category I usually try to avoid. That is, they are way too central to look natural (in fact, that's the result you usually have from a fractal terrain generator...). As a geographer/geologist those fractal mountains never look good to me. In a fantasy world it doesn't absolutely matter, but mountains are on earth mostly "organized" in elongated chains and they are often at the border of a landmass.
Anyways... apart from that, good work there too!

    Keep us informed
  • Erior, thnk you for your words. I am really puting a lot of effort on this map as I pretend to use it also to made my regional and locals maps, that's why I am being so detalist on my costlines.

About the mountains I am also not very confortable with then, but its the best that I could come with until now. I will try to put then less central and see how it looks. I hope that you keep an eye on my project =)

  • Using different colors for height changes is something several of us do around here.

It took me several trials and errors to come up with a bitmap fill sequence i like.

I have made some small changes in my palete. Later I post an example.

Here is an updated version. I havent had much time to work on the map ...
  • I think that I have to made the textures stronger so they can be seen in a "world view". And now I am satisfied with the colours of my altitude lines.
  • I am redoing the mountains but I will maintain the colors. I have also rearanjed some islands. I will post it soon.

  • They don't stand out much. Probably look better with more of a contrast as they get higher in elevation.

I was trying it but could not find a good effect. Any suggestions? At the moment I am using a Edge Fade Inner (2 / 98 / 0) and Texturize CA24_relief02 (0.15 / 2500)

For mine, I have green at lower altitudes, fading into brown, then a blue/ice bitmap fill for high altitudes.

    color chart for surface maps

World all map showing mountains in my campaign first 4 rows shows the entire set of contour bitmap fills.

  • Here is a little update. I had put more mountains and toyed with the colours.

Looking very nice now. Really looks like you have put a lot of thought and work into those continents.

Personally, I do believe there is a little too much "green" in your mountains though. I am not sure how tall your mountains are supposed to be though.

In this map I am only using lines up 2 000 or 2 500m. The highets gronds are not show. But I am thinking in diminush the number of altitude lines that I will use. In the moment this is my pallete:

    LANDMASS - 499 - COLOUR 86
    500m - 999 - COLOUR 87
    1 000m - 1 499 - COLOUR 89
    1 500m - 1 999 - COLOUR 90
    2 000m - 2 499 - COLOUR 91
    2 500m - 2 999 - COLOUR 92

    3 000m - 3 999 - COLOUR 110
    4 000m - 4 999 - COLOUR 109
    5 000m - 5 999 - COLOUR 108
    6 000m - 6 999 - COLOUR 107

    7 000m - 7 999 - COLOUR 44
    8 000m - 8 999 - COLOUR 45
    9 000m - 9 999 - COLOUR 46
    10 000m - + - COLOUR 47

Waht you guys think about this pallet?:

    REINOS IMORTAIS - Mapa A - 35 000 X 17 500

    COLOURS:

    LANDMASS - 500 - COLOUR 86
    501m - 1 000 - COLOUR 87
    1 001m - 2 000 - COLOUR 88
    2 001m - 3 000 - COLOUR 90

    3 001m - 4 000 - COLOUR 108
    4 001m - 5 000 - COLOUR 109
    5 001m - 6 000 - COLOUR 110

    6 001m - 7 000 - COLOUR 254
    7 001m - 8 000 - COLOUR 255
    8 001m - 9 000 - COLOUR 15

    It is only a test.
  • Make the top most contour a medium blue and I think it will work fine.

!!!DELETED IMAGE BECAUSE THERE IS A NEW VERSION SOME POSTS BELLOW!!!

Ok. I have merged the last 3 contours (in this scale would be very hard to do this much lines). Here is my suggestion:

    REINOS IMORTAIS - Mapa A - 35 000 X 17 500

    COLOURS:

    LANDMASS - 500 - COLOUR 86
    501m - 1 000 - COLOUR 87
    1 001m - 2 000 - COLOUR 88
    2 001m - 3 000 - COLOUR 90

    3 001m - 4 000 - COLOUR 108
    4 001m - 5 000 - COLOUR 109
    5 001m - 6 000 - COLOUR 110

    +6 000m - - COLOUR 79

  • I like the new color set -- it's a good transition between lowlands -> hills -> mountains, with the shift in colors from green to beige to grey. I would avoid making the highest contour blue, myself; there's too much possibility of having that end up confused with any lakes or inland seas you eventually add.

You have a good point Thistle. I will continue to toy with the last colour and see waht I can come with.

Personally, I'd go with a stronger contrast in the 3000-5000 range, with a set of darker brown contours. That way mountains stand out more strongly on the world map. But that's just my personal taste.

Again a little update that I made yesterday night.

An update of my colour chart is in the end. Later I will change the map here with an updated one using this colours.
