CC3 Crashing

Campaign Cartographer 3 has started crashing when I try to draw freehand, what should I do? I'm using a pretty old windows xp, but it's been working fine until now. I hope someone can help me, I really want to draw freehand for my project.

Hi there, when does CC3 crash? The moment you start the freehand command? Or after clicking one or more points?
  • Oh, sorry I didn't provide more details earlier. The first time I think it happened after I had drawn several islands and, sadly (and stupidly on my part) I didn't have autosave activated for some reason and it crashed and I lost those islands. The second time I had just started it up, activated autosave, and clicked on the 'freehand sketch' tool and then maybe clicked once on the map, and it crashed again.

Mine notoriously crashes whenever I click too fast making waypoints, or when using the zoom or scrollbar to move about the map. Sometimes, when I restart is just crashes right away again. Mostly, it doesn't. It's just something I live with, I suggest "save plenty and often".

'save as' plenty and often. filename01, filename02, etc. That way if filename75 doesn't load, you can go back to filename74 and load it. Saved me more than once.

    You're welcome.

Oh, and sometimes I realize that a number of versions back, further than undo goes, is the better direction for a particular map.

I forgot about this trick (been awhile since I've used CC3), and had started a new map. Several hours of work on the map were lost in another crash, even though I was using autosave. So is autosave not reliable? Should I just 'save as' everytime autosave pops up instead?

Autosave saves as its own file in the (I think) CC3 root dir. It doesn't write over your origional map file name. If you experience a crash just load the autosave.fcw (I think, sorry at work and can't confirm my hunch) and you should be good to go!

Thank you thank you thank you!!! You've saved me from a horrible day...I got everything back except for like the last minute of changes (between autosaves). Thanks for that bit of wisdom...I didn't think of looking for autosave folders. :-)

I have had the autosave file become corrupted in the past. So I save as often. save as filename01_001, save as filename01_002, etc. until done.

This method also allows me to go back further than undo can undo if I decide I've gone off in a mapping tangent I prefer to change.

Yeah, hopefully I'll make a habit of that starting next time I get on there. Thanks guys for all your help! :)
