Hints & Tips for creating ship deck plans

All - I want to start creating 'battle-map' scale ship plans (0AD thru 17th century eras), and I'm wondering if there are any blogs, guides, annuals, tips'n'tricks that anyone is aware of that would help me do this, and what Profantasy applications would best fit the task? (I own them all)
