Providing the direction for a trace?

Good morning! I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, and I'm sure the answer is somewhere, but I'm having a devil of a time finding it. If I am using the trace option when providing the borders for a territory, how do I tell it which direction to trace when I'm tracing around the borders of my continent? I am repeatedly having to redo my borders because it goes the long way, covering everything *but* the area that I want covered. What am I doing wrong?

When you are asked to select an entity to trace, the point you clicked on that entity will always be in the traced section. So make sure you click somewhere on your entity that will be inside the traced section.

Okay... so when I click the starting point, it needs to be on the "outside" of the point where I selected the border I want traced? Okay! I can handle that.
