Character Artist not working

I just picked up Character Artist for the hell of it. I know it's a bit old, but I just wanted to mess around with it. I don't know WTF is going on with colors. Let me give you an example...

I change the color to some shade of green. The elven face looks green.
I place the elven face.
The elven face continue to look green.
I click on "Torso"... and the elven face in my drawing turns back to flesh colors.

Playing around, I've found that the colors seem to go to some utterly random previous color used once before. I can find no rhyme or reason for it. The manual includes some comments about the varicolor, but that doesn't seem to make much difference.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm running Windows XP. I don't know whether it's a problem with the software or the user.

Actually, I figured it out. It appears that while the Varicolor (or whatever it's called) objects will permit you to define a custom color, they then get very confused with what to do with it. So long as I pick from the standard 256 colors, it's fine.
