importing from Illustrator

Has anyone successfully opened an Adobe Illustrator drawing in CC2 or CC3? I've tried both dwg and dxf formats with no luck. Is there perhaps a limit on how many entities can be in a dxf/dwg drawing in CC3?

No, there shouldn't be. In the latest version you should be able to import those formats. However, DWG and DXF don't support fill style, so there is a bit of post work to do.
  • I'm trying to import a b&w map with no fills, just lines and text and haven't yet been able to successfully import it. Does it matter that there are layers in the AI drawing? Should I try to import the layers one at a time? The DXF and DWG files successfully open in AI after export, but CC crashes while opening either one.

Perhaps there is a log someplace where I can find out why CC is crashing?

What's your version of CC3? Have you installed Update 9?
  • Yes, I installed update 9 a couple of days ago. CC Version is 3.41.

I also noticed something odd - the ai source file is 1.5 MB, but the dwg and dxf files are 50 MB. Could the AI export be the problem? If so, is there some other way to convert ai files to dwg/dxf?

Sorry, I can't really say anything about the conversion of ai files to AutoCad format. But I'm not suprised that a 50Mb file turns out problematic.

There are a number of pdf to dwg/dxf converters floating around the web, so you could try to first create a pdf and then use one of those to make an AutoCad file. Just an idea.

Try a very small drawing. If that doesn't work, then there is a general problem, otherwise, it's the specific drawing.
  • cc2 will open a simple dwg or dxf file but cc3 crashes every time.

Are you sure you have the latest version?
  • yes, I just downloaded and installed update 9 a couple of weeks ago. My version number for cc3 is 3.41, if that isn't the latest I can download and install update 9 again.
