Somewhere along the line the FT Cosmographer export broke so that the exported image isn't properly imported into the CC2 file. You need to manually delete the broken image link and then manually insert the image behind the hex grid.
I guessed it might be something like this but I haven't figured out how to delete the broken image link and re-insert files... a lot of the CC functionality seems a tad arcane to me.
Hide each layer one at a time. That will show you which layer the red X is on. Hide and freeze all layers but that one. Now delete the image, then go back to the layer section, show all thaw all.
Thanks... discovered a "numeric edit" on the object (now that the other layers aren't getting in the way) allows me to re-link to the image... picked the second option in the list and bingo! It's looking like I'd expect it to look. I really don't like the way objects are selected - I understand drag select but when you have to click on the top left hand corner or something obscure like that it drives me nuts! Getting there in the end though...

Selection is one (probably biggest) component of CC3's learning curve. The good news is once you master it, EVERYTHING goes much easier.
I'd like to make sure that you don't have a misconception about selection though. There isn't really any obscurity about where you have to select an item. You just need to click on the object, or do a bounding box (drag select) that intersects it.
Having said that, maybe what is confusing is what an object is: * A polygon is a boundary -- you have to click (or include in your dragging box) the edge. * Text is selected by the bottom line (ok, this one is often obscure for me - there is a line at the bottom of the letters) * Symbols I always can select by clicking on them -- I suppose there is a bounding box or something, but never have a problem clicking pretty much anywhere on the symbol. * Most other objects are selected by their edge (anywhere on the edge)
The key to selecting is: selecting what you want, checking to see if you got anything you DIDN'T want (the status bar tells how many objects were selected) and then unselecting the objects you didn't want.
Finally, finally, there is an interface option that allows you to switch from Action-Object to Object-Action (Select the things, then select what you want to do with them). From how you describe your frustration/irritation, I'm guessing that this won't cure the things that irritate you. But you might try it out.
The best way to get up the learning slope is to keep asking questions. There are lots of people here to help.
Thanks, that's a really useful response. I learnt quite a bit there. I definitely seem to have to click on the edge for symbols before anything appears to happen - perhaps this is because I'm using the CC3 bitmap symbols?
Also, some kinds of objects respond to some actions, and some don't and there's no real way of finding out (without memorising the manual) - so a lot of the time, I click on something like numeric edit, click on the object, and I'm none to wiser whether it's not responding because it doesn't support that action, or isn't responding on it because I didn't click it in the right place.
I suspect all of this becomes second nature after a while - I am still relatively new. Also, don't get me wrong - the functionality is amazing and I wouldn't swap CC3 for anything else out there. I'm no artist but I've managed to put together some highly functional (if not beautiful) maps in next to no time.
You also bring up some good points about some objects supporting some actions or not. I agree that's annoying, but I've lived with it so long that I don't see it any more (I'm not denying it's annoying, just bemusedly realizing that it just doesn't register for me). I suspect that I just inherently click on the right place on a symbol -- from repeated use.
Simon/Ralf: Blytha's comments maybe point up a UI change that could help new people a lot: If the selected object doesn't support the selected action, could the status line tell them? E.g. something like, "Explode does not work on a circle".
I have to admit that I'm not sure what actions do or don't work with what object types. I know explode doesn't work with circles, but the other things I tried worked (despite the fact that I was looking for things that wouldn't work).
