Net framework question post net patch

Hi all

got home and bought CC3 and downloaded the compatible updates, now I've read that I need the specific version of .net to run them - but I know the verison 8 patch has done away with this.

What I want to know is: Do I have to still download and run the .net framework programme, to install the compatible programmes (dd2 etc) and then run the patch which will remove the .net need in order to install them at all? I guess this is a straight yes no answer. I suspect the answer is yes, but I am loath to load programmes on I don't need or want.

Can I unstall the net framework afterwards if the patch does remove the need for .net compatibility and support?

Also one other thing I'm using win 7 64 bit with a AMD x4 Phenom chip and 4 gig of ram, but CC3 seems a bit slow, especially when using sheet effects is this normal - even Photoshop isn't as slow, especially when doing redraws or zooming in on a space?

Thanks

No, you don't need .net at all. Just install CC3 first, then install the Update 8 patch (to replace the .net dependant component), then everything else, then Update 8 again (to update everything else)

As for slowdown when using effects, this is normal. Remember that CC3 has to recalculate the complete effects set each time you add/remove/edit entities or change zoom or viewing area. Photoshop basically only have to calculate them once when applying them to image. Thereafter, they have changed the image permanently, and never PS never need to think about it again. Normally, you should work with effects off, and only turn them on when you are actually defining the effects, and when you are ready for printing or exporting the map.
  • Hi Monsen actually this is how I started. I instealled CC3 and then the patch and then DD2 but it wouldn't install without the next component! So I couldn't get any further. So I installed the net component. Now I've run into another problem in that my serial number (which is registered on the PF website) isn't accepted. So I've decided to contact tech support and hope I can get an answer to start mapping my dungeon with the DD2 compatibility update.

Anyway not sure why CC3 with patch 8 didn't work but it didn't. Unless I needed to restart the computer - hmm, might give that a try!

    Thanks

Yea, you are right. Seems like they didn't remove the .net requirement from the compatibility updates.
In any case, you should be able to remove .net afterward, the software doesn't really use it. It was only used by a single component, which was later replaced. The issue is basically that the installer belives it is still needed, so it checks if it is present.

I am sure tech support will be able to help you with your serial number issue quickly.
  • Thanks again, actually what is gualing about the serial number is that I was able to load CD compatible 2 no problem I went back to try DD2 again and still its telling me my serial is not valid. Argghh.

On a seperate note, I know that the CSUAC site is currently not available, but is there anyway to get the symbols that were being distributed? I know that many people downloaded it, I don't want to do anything illegal (hence buying and seeking to support PF etc with legal serials and what not) but I wanted to find out if there was a way to get a legitimate copy to use?

    Ok thanks again

No, the EULA the CSUAC was distributed under prevented redistribution.

But you should have a look at the SMAC instead. It contains a lot more symbols than the CSUAC.
  • Shame, but some is better than none.

Monsen I know that you're an experienced user (I was to under CC2 I helped make maps for the FR atlas for instance and often took part in the symbol competitions, but a lot has changed since then) I really want to use CC3 to draw battlemaps. I know there is an atlas with it all on, but I am kind of hoping to get buy without as money is an issue. (Getting CC3, DD2 and the annual with the battlemap issue will easily reach over £60 and thats before even printing a single map off - eek!) One of the things I want to do, is to use CC3 with the DD2 compatiability. But I've noticed something, when you pull up a template with the bitmap function it puts in a background. To save on printing costs I don't want a background but do want everything else. Do you know what layer the background sits on? I want to delete it and remake the file as a new template for me to use.

    Thanks again

The background is usually in the BACKGROUND layer. Technically, there is no rule that it has to be on that layer, but most templates keep to that convention.

When you create a new map using the wizard (Decide settings myself), you can just remove the checkmark for "Map Background", and you won't have any background in the new map.

And you'll do fine without the annual. It is very nice to have (And I highly recommend all of them), but you can draw anything you want even with plain vanilla CC3 without any addons at all. It gets easier with the addons, as you get a load of symbols, fills, pre-defined drawing tools and pre-defined templates, but it is quite possible to manage without.
  • Thanks Monsen,

Got one other question. My previous experience with Pro Fantasy is that they were very quick in responding. Reading Simon's blog I see that he said the office is effectively on holiday, so I am beginning to wonder how long it will take for them to respond to my query about my serial number. As it stands I've managed to get everything but the one module (DD2) running.

Have you any experience with tech support, I don't want to hassle them if its just that they are dealing with other things and will get to me or if I need to find some other route. I'm in the UK so I can call them for instance?

Anyway thanks mate you've been a big help.

Usually, they're quite fast (within 24 hours). I knew they just were at GenCon, but that should be over now.
But if they seem to take too long, you can try the alternate address located at the contact page, or just call them (numbers on the same page).

If you registered it before, did you look on your registration page ?

    Registration login page

I have sometimes found serial numbers on my registration page I thought were lost.

Although the EULA that Cecil distributed the CSUAC under prevented redistribution of the CSUAC, I don't believe the symbols themselves suffer from any such restriction. The symbols were created by a multitude of others who released them to the public via the Dundjinni forums. The symbols can still be obtained there although they aren't gathered together in a single convenient package and there are no pre-made cc3 catalog files to go with them. Shessar's SMAC is a wonderful resource as well.

Thanks Old Guy, been looking through Shessar's stuff. Will get to grips with it soon.

Jim I did check there and copied and pasted from there to make sure I was correct to begin with and still no deal. Still not heard back from Pro Fantasy - so may try and ring them today.

    Thanks all
