3D Maps (No Glasses Required) [WIP]

Hey,

I just wanted to show off a work in progress. What you see in the video is a 3D map, created from CC3 (Castles) that has been exported and turned into a Lenticular 3D image. If you have any comments, leave them here. I hope to post a final version of my world map in stunning 3D once I work all the kinks out of the process.

Looks cool, even if it is a bit hard to see in the video. I'm looking forward to see the finished thing.

Yea, my brilliant plan to film that a 2 am last night didn't produce the best quality video! =)

My overall goal is to produce a 8x10 "Magical Map" that can be included as a handout. Despite the image being no thicker then a sheet of paper, the mountains really leap off the page, cutting through the clouds, while the rivers are carved deeply into the earth as they wind their way to the ocean. I can't think of anything cooler to start off a fantasy based Pathfinder game.

  • This is a pretty cool idea. Where did you get the lenticular lens and how are you printing it? You have my curiosity up. Details please!
  • You can buy the lens at www.vuethru.com I suggest getting the "Super Easy T Frame Stand" as a proofing device so you don't waste materials. Printing is done on my $60 HP printer on Kodak Ultima Paper. I'm interweaving the image with Photoshop CS4 Extended, however the free software works reasonably well.

If you hang around for a few weeks I will write up the best way to make these, and upload a completed project sample.

  • I showed your video to a couple of people from our gaming group and their eyes lit up from the possibilities. Everything from a 3D world map to winter/summer and day/night flip maps. I look forward to your sharing.

Whoa! Great Idea! I love the winter/summer day/night flips.

We can also add "Ruined" and "Maintained" to the list.

I think my brain just broke from the possiblities.....
  • Short update. I have placed an order for a different type of lens that should enhance the project. I hope to post again sometime week after next.

  • Gosh! (Hi all!)

I'm used with 3D experiments and I did not think about "do it myself" using lenticular sheets! Great idea!

I'm very interrested in knowing how you do the 3D effect! I'm looking forward to get your tutorial! (actually, I searched on VueThru and their free software, SuperFlip! but there is nothing about doing the 3D effect... You speak about Photoshop... How do you use it to achieve the 3D effect? By moving layers along and saving every image?)

I'm starving to know how to! My players will go mad!

    Warm regards,

    Paul
  • My new sheets arrived, and I I believe I have developed the process fully. It will just take sometime to prefect it. As for Photoshop, Photoshop CS4/CS5-Extended (important you get the extended version) has the 3D buried in the settings. I will write it all up once I finish my project. Shouldn't take more then a few weeks.
