Help building a mountain overlay map

I am building a map that includes four cities that are in closed in a giant mountain chain that had four giant peaks, one on each corner. The map looks really bad with the 3d mountains. We do not like the way the city symbols look so we have been just drawing circles as the city area. Any help would be appreciated

Large scale maps don't lend themselves to symbols use.. well, I use symbols on large scale maps, but not many on each map.

You could use polygons with different bitmap fills for the cities.

A city that is a military stronghoold could be one bitmap fill, a city that is mostly trade and farming center could be a different bitmap fill.

You can render the mountains by level contours with gradually lighter fill style.
