Node Spikes

Hi Folks,

Been a while and a bit. I am re entering ProFantasy after some absence due to life drama. The map I'm trying to create shows three node spikes or miter nodes. I have tried several methods to edit but the whole coastline ends up being selected and turns pink. I have to assume I'm clicking the wrong spot. Can anyone take a look at the image and provide any guidance. Alternatively, is there a YouTube video link that goes into detail and demonstrates how to correct this? I assume explode coastline nodes or some other method.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps try the SIMPLIFY command on both the coastline and the Land polygons (there are two identical polys there on different sheets). Read the command line and when prompted for a Simplification Distance start with 1. If that takes out too much of the detail CTRL+Z for undo, and try again with a smaller distance.

Or, since that flaw is caused by the width of the coastline entity as much as the proximity of the nodes, hide the COASTLINE sheet and use a blue glow on the LAND sheet instead.

    Hi Sue,

Thanks for the advice. I will try that. I have noticed if I explode the countour (blue line) I get a number of blocks which I can delete individually. Once I delete any blocks I am not sure how to remedy the gap, plus it seems the land (green) stil retains the spike shape once I unhide everything. Let me give simplify a try. I also found online that it might be possible to paint out the spike with a sea polygon but it sounded messy.

SIMPLIFY should do the job, but you must do it to the land mass as well as the coastline, or they may not match perfectly afterwards.

I don't recommend using Explode for any reason other than to disassemble a multipoly. That's a complex polygon made up of several single polygons fused into one entity such that a large polygon may have a hole in it. Since these are rare, and usually a result of exporting contours from Fractal Terrains to a CC drawing, Explode is hardly ever used. There are many other more suitable tools.

Hi Sue, I perservered, don't ask me how but when I clicked on the outline a few times eventually the node lines appeared. I was able to use the left and right arrow keys to move back and forth between nodes and use the delete key to get rid of the offenders. A bit of luck more than skill ;0)

    Many thanks ;0)

The key was the following showing up in the command line - INS DEL <--> New_Position [done]:

That's great. It was a suggestion option, but I chose SIMPLIFY because it's guaranteed to get rid of most of all those problems all in one go.

Well done for succeeding with the more tricky solution.

  • You're not alone in battering away at unwanted nodes to get rid of them! I usually end up hiding or freezing any overlapping entities (like the LAND sheet here), and then just clicking to remove a node or two nearby more or less at random till something useful happens (and using "Undo" if it makes things worse!). Of course, the trick is then to unhide the LAND sheet and lose the same nodes in that, otherwise, as Sue said, the outline may no longer match the landmass...

Here is where I am at for now.

Still some minor changes to make. Thanks for all the help.
