Dungeon Level Symbols

  • But for reference, here is Ahab, my beloved Schipperke (Belgian barge dog - all black with no tail).

  • @Quenten He looks like a happy doggie. If you can get a top down picture of him, I can try making it into a symbol. Easiest if there is no black in the background; that wooden floor would be perfect. Of course, I'm sure if you tried standing over him to take a picture, he would just think you wanted to play. 🐶

While we're doing this, here's Sue (unrelated to anyone here). She helps me map and write code. She wants to give more input than I'd like, but she's welcome to watch. She buries her head under my arm, and I finally got a photo of it.

Cute girl Kert. And a lovely boy you have there Quenten. Also quite a handsome little fellah there Maidhc.

Here's Jack in one of his typical postures, usually pushing the keyboard off the desk and into my lap, or using his tail to do some touch-typing or hitting the mouse buttons (cat tails are much more proficient at both typing and clicking that I could ever have imagined before I got a cat)

(Shessar - Maybe we need a long-haired cat?)

@Monsen that's not a housecat. Jack is a snow leopard. You should run now.

  • Perhaps @Shessar would choose to make a sleeping dog more realistic. Here's my Argentine Dogo, taking her sacred siesta.

  • Love seeing everyone's animals. 😍 I will certainly try to include the suggestions you make as I go.

Right now I'm trying to get the shading on chests to look right.

Chests are horribly difficult to shade correctly, but it looks ok to me.

  • Thanks Sue! I must have made 100 variations and finally manage to get one that looks right. Yay!

  • I was just thinking the other day that we need poster bed symbols -- all the royals used 'em for privacy and warmth. I cannot wait for this to be available some day. They will be perfect for my Rivendell-inspired elven palace that I would like to do.

  • I like the seperate symbols for bed and 4 poster - especially if made as variable symbols. They are beautiful, Shessar.

  • @Royal Scribe My problem is that I have volunteered myself for too many real life commitments, and they are all needed and worthy of my time. I fit making symbol art and maps into my down time, so I apologize for how long this is taking. Rest assured that even when I'm not actively posting here, that I am still plugging away at this.

@Quenten Yes, I plan to make the beds and curtains separate with both having vari-color options. This way I'll be able to make just a few different designs for for the curtains rather than multiple versions of each bed.

A few curtain ideas I'm currently playing with. These are just the rough design ideas that I'm working on currently.

  • And for the time of year, we next need a "Scrooge" figure, and the odd ghost or three...! 👻

These are all looking excellent. Might be worth considering having the wooden frame as a separate symbol option for beds without the curtains.

[Surprised someone hasn't asked for mosquito netting as well, although it's probably too late to stop that now 😉]

  • I'll consider adding just the frames, but mosquito netting might not make it into the final catalog.

I've just reacquainted myself with setting up vari-colored symbols so I'll probably disappear for a while again as I finish up the beds and other bedroom furniture. (I think I'll move onto the parlor/sitting room/solar once done with the bedroom. Hmmm. Or maybe the great hall. Not Sure.)

  • The varicolor symbols work really well. Sometimes varicolor symbols can look a little odd or washed out, but these are really great. Love the option of giving each bedroom uniqueness matching it's occupant's taste.

(I think I'll move onto the parlor/sitting room/solar once done with the bedroom. Hmmm. Or maybe the great hall. Not Sure.)

When you get to the great hall, may I register a plea for thrones? All of these symbols would work so well in a castle or palace, so some special thrones would really be handy. Along with any other regalia (like top down crowns that we can place on a pillow), or upright suits of armor.

And of course, the Royal Scribe is always interested in library accoutrements should the muse strike...

    This is all incredibly impressive.

  • Glad you like them! And these are the kinds of ideas that I need. All of them may not make it in, but the more ideas I get of what might be useful, the more complete the symbol set will be.

As for vari-colored symbols looking washed out, the key is to use the darkest colors. My preferred is to not go passed the forth color on the left. You get much richer colors that way. Compare the image in the post above, which used the colors in the mid range, to these.

I fully recognize that this is too many ideas unless you’re going for a whole year’s worth of annuals, but here are some thoughts…

    • Ornate staircases and steps - wooden, stone, marble - flare out at the base like for a grand ballroom, spiral staircase that simultaneously goes up and down (like Creepy Crypts), individual steps
    • If you do outdoors stuff: Varicolor fruit trees, flowers, topiary
    • Wizard/Library stuff - globe, astrolabe, mortar and pestle, telescopes, jewelers tools, cartography tools, quills and inkwells, spectacles, books and scrolls and scroll cases, crystal balls, wands and staffs
    • Individual gems (so that one large gem could be a magical artifact, special treasure, etc)
    • Rugs and carpets
    • You touched on this earlier: varicolor design patterns and heraldry symbols like Marine Dungeons’
    • Statues - PC/heroic figures types (fighters, mages, cloaked roguish figures, priest types), royalty/nobility types, animals, demons and angels, mythical creatures, large and small idols (I’m thinking both like the giant idol on the original D&D Players Handbook cover but also the small idol Indiana Jones steals)
    • Gargoyles and grotesques, other architectural ornamentation (spires?)
    • Wall ornamentation - pictures frames (could be portraits or mirrors), varicolor torches/sconces
    • Flags and flagpoles, separate so can be mixed and matched (top down or jutting from wall)
    • Siege equipment - catapults, ballistas, trebuchets, battering rams
    • Bell tower stuff: bells, clock faces, gears
    • Barn stuff: hay bales, saddles, horse shoes
