Border Templates

I'm looking for either templates I can use or ideas on how to achieve border templates to achieve the follow two looks.

1) Something like the edge of a computer screen. i.e. for a modern/sci-fi game where the map might be something displayed on a data pad or computer screen.

2) Some sort of "modern" or "futuristic" paper edge. What might a printout of a map look like in the future? Something more interesting than a white paper print border. i.e. you know how a torn edge parchment looks old and fantasy, what would a the hard map of future look like?

Thinking about the first look, and glancing at the edge of my current monitor a couple of additional sheets would do it. In this example (originally MS Overland which I know all users have) I have added an INNER BORDER and OUTER FRAME sheet setup and drawn a shape on each to represent those parts. Both are on the SCREEN layer.

The 'monitor off' background is just a grey polygon on the BACKGROUND sheet, which I moved to the MAP BORDER layer and resized to include the border and frame details for an automatic export of the whole. I then froze the MAP BORDER and SCREEN layers as is my habit.

I hope this gives you a few ideas.

I'm not sure what you are after with the second look.

  • Thank you Sue!

I don't know what I'm after with the second one either :0

I did find these two on Cartographer's Guild. I like the first one more than the second. Just hoping others have come across this challenge as well in the past and have ideas :)

You have to be a member of the Cartographer's Guild to see those, but I get what you are saying. It wouldn't be right to snatch them and paste them here either, I don't think.

So your second look is a very lose general description. I would experiment with various combinations of shapes, colours and effects and see what you come up with, using sheets above the SCREEN and being mindful of where the thin green line of the MAP BORDER lies to include the decoration.

  • Not sure about just a paper edge for something vaguely science-fiction future. The whole sheet probably should have its own look/texture - like parchment or vellum did in previous centuries (albeit still in use for high-quality or special items today).

Perhaps something like a metal scroll would be used for futuristic mapping, with the design etched into the surface, if we're thinking of similarly long-lasting, quality materials to vellum, say.

For modern paper, we have the recent Sticky Note Dungeon Annual options, of course, and further back in time, the Annual issue covering Investigation Props might be worth a look too. Note that the latter option has a ready-made computer readout background option!

Thanks Wyvern. Yea, something, I just don't know what such should look like. If I figure something out I will at least post what I settle on here. Though I'll probably just go with the black/grey monitor edge like Sue sampled.

  • Thinking about this later, I recalled the Metalunans Interocitor catalogue was printed (?) onto "some kind of metal" and bound in book form. (Though it seemed pretty similar to thick paper to me!)

[And for the confused, this is a reference to the 1955 movie "This Island Earth" 😎]
