Replacing MS Sans Serif(8)
Parts of the interface, including the New Map dialogue, rely on MS Sans Serif(8).

I am unable to read that dialogue in either Wine or Windows. It looks like Microsoft Sans Serif replaced MS Sans Serif in 1997, and for whatever reason, neither my Wine setup nor my Windows setup have working substitutions.
I also have visual issues and need larger text (which Windows 11 Settings support) and bolder text (which they don't, so I've had to use Winaero).
I think other people here report font substitution issues on maps, too.
Does anyone know how to fix font substitution in Wine and/or in Windows 11?

https://superuser.com/questions/491373/font-smoothing-in-wine may offer some suggestions if you haven't already tried it. The idea appears to be to force a mapping from the Windows fonts to the Linux ones.
I'm no expert on fonts, so take this with a grain of salt. It might be possible to rename the font that you have to be the font that you want. Here's a page that describes the process. I don't know about the legality.
On Windows, I was able to use MacType to make some fonts, including the New Map dialogue fonts, much bolder. Although the text sizes are very erratic. Some parts of the interface, and some text, responds to Windows text size anddisplay scaling settings, and some only responds to display resolution settings. So I have to turn scaling down to 100%, and then turn resolution down to 1280 x 720, and crane my head close to the scree, to use the New Map dialogue.
