[WIP] Lumadair - Hand-Drawn Fantasy (CA221)

Usually I wait until Ralf has had a chance to demo new annuals in the Live sessions, but since there was no Live today because of the May Day holiday, I decided to dive in anyway. Here's my tried-and-true, oft-mapped Republic of Lumadair in the new "Hand-Drawn Fantasy" style.

I used the cutout approach for the rivers. But rather than drawing the swamp terrain around the rivers, I added the Color Key effect to the Swamp Terrain sheet and then copied my magenta rivers to that sheet as well.

It's funny how much I've mapped Lumadair, given that it isn't even intended to be the main location for my campaign world. But it is a conveniently-sized area, and once I did one map of it, I found it useful to do other styles for the same location as a convenient way of comparing them.

  • One weird thing I noticed: when I used the Mixed Forest Draw Tool, it didn't actually add trees. Instead, it added strange vertical lines. I went and added the trees manually, hoping that the lines were just a display thing in CC3 that wouldn't render in the JPEG export -- but they're visible on the JPEG.

You can see them better on this, which is just the SYMBOLS sheet -- so those lines got placed on the Symbols sheet instead of the tree symbols. It looks like I can manually delete them (just tested on one), so it's easy enough to resolve...but odd. I have a vague recollection of something like this happening in another annual, but the details are fuzzy.

    Love the map :)

I've been a bit busy today, so I haven't had a chance to download the new annual.

It looks like some kind of polygon shape filled with some kind of hatch fill. Can you select it?

  • Yes, the lines and the fill can be independently selected (and deleted). I drew a new forest over another part of the map to illustrate it.

Step 1 - This is the area I'm drawing the new forest. (Note that I used the Mixed Forest tool but I had the same experience with the Deciduous, Conifer, and Pine Forests.) Pointing this out to show that the grass symbols were already there, not added by the tool.

Step 2 - Drew a mixed forest. What showed up was a green fill with lines instead of tree symbols.

Step 3 - The green fill is on the FOREST sheet, not the TERRAIN FOREST sheet. Not sure if that matters but pointing it out just in case.

Step 4 - The lines are on the SYMBOLS sheet, so it appears it's drawing lines instead of trees?

How curious. Maybe Ralf will reveal the mystery when he does the live mapping session.

Looks like there are a few .symfill files missing from the install, so it defaults to the standard escarpment config, and the default there is a line symbol....

Sorry for the missing symfill files! I've added them now, re-downloading and reinstalling the Annual issue should fix it.

@Royal Scribe That is a lovely map. I forgot to say while I was absorbed by the mystery of the green stripes.

    ...

@Ralf It's a really beautiful style :D I don't think you will get much peace now everyone knows what you can do with good old pen and ink ;)

  • Can confirm that all four of the Forest tools now work properly. It was easier to delete the mysterious lines than to redraw the forests, but at least future maps won't have that issue.

When I brought the land over from the Fractal Terrains export, they were all locked together as a multipoly. I decided to explode them so that I could use the "Change Like Draw Tool" function with the green land for Lumadair and the default brown for the other continents.

Also, the multipoly sea contours from Fractal Terrains have the darker sea as the base with lighter contours on top. When I copied over the sea contours, I just copied a light one and then used the "Change Like Draw Tool" to change it to the lighter contour of the Hand-Drawn Fantasy style, and then manually drew in the darker contours. Not bad for a map that took me less than an hour for the initial map.
